Doris U. Carlin Obituary

Doris U. “Dorrie” Carlin, age 96, of Hagerstown, MD, formerly of Coatesville, PA, passed away on Tuesday, December 27th, 2022.

Born on September 20th, 1926, in Coatesville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Myrtle Landis Underwood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Walter D. Carlin, Jr.

Surviving are her five children, Beth Barth and husband Bob, of Maryland, John Carlin and wife Judy, Tom Carlin and wife Karen, Bob Carlin and wife Kerri, all of Bedford County, PA and Becky Mountain and husband Kevin, of Coatesville, as well as eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Doris lived a life filled with music, as she began taking piano lessons at age 10. She met Walter at a party held by another piano pupil and best friend Marge Zerr, July 18 1941. They celebrated that date every year thereafter. Walter and Dorrie married November 10th 1945, and began a farm life they both enjoyed with their five children for many years in Coatesville and Bedford County, PA.  Dorrie taught piano lessons in her home for more than forty years. She played the organ at services in the Doe Run Presbyterian Church and the Everett United Methodist Church for more than fifty years, and played for many weddings and special services through the years.  Early in her life, she had also served as choir director for Friendship United Methodist Church in Gum Tree, PA. In addition to music service to her churches, she participated in their women’s groups and quilting circle, and served as Deacon and Elder at Doe Run. She always supported her children’s schools, taking leadership positions in the PTAs and band parents.  Her preparation of hearty farm to table meals, and enthusiastic laughter, was graciously, fondly, and generously shared with numerous friends and family. She blessed us with her care and appreciation throughout her abundant life.

A private graveside service was held at the time of her death at Doe Run Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Coatesville, PA.

There will be a Musical Celebration of Life Service for the friends and family at the Doe Run Presbyterian Church on June 24, 2023. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:30 AM with a service at 10:30 AM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Doe Run Presbyterian Church, 3104 Doe Run Church Road, Coatesville, PA, 19320.

To honor Dorrie’s love of music, contributions will be used to support the church’s music programs.
