Ann Colleen Tanner Sydney, Nova Scotia Obituary

Ann Colleen Tanner

It is with broken hearts, we, the family of Ann Colleen Tanner, regretfully announce the sudden passing of our loving wife and mother on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the age of 77 in Hospice Cape Breton surrounded by her loving family.

Born June 24, 1945, in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John “Jack” and Christina (Packer) McCarron.

Mom grew up in Ashby on Kane Street, attended Constantine School, and graduated from Holy Angels High School. She worked at the Cape Breton Post and became a telephone operator for MT&T until she had to retire early as she developed Agoraphobia which lasted 16 years. Once she overcame the illness, you couldn’t keep her home, living her life to the fullest. She was deeply involved with her family who she loved dearly. Mom was her children’s and grandchildren’s biggest fan, especially when it came to hockey and basketball. She grew up watching hockey and played basketball herself, so she knew all the rules and you couldn’t hold her back when she called out the refs for what she considered bad calls. She was the most loving and caring woman who devoted her entire life to us. Mom was known for her quick wit, her infectious smile, and her kind and compassionate spirit. She was an incredible lady who you instantly loved when you met her. She had the kindest heart and strongest faith in God, who we know was with her to the end giving her the courage and strength to endure her brief battle with sickness. Mom was our heart, our rock, our voice of reason and our love. Her favorite prayer “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference”.

Colleen is survived by her husband of 51 years, James; daughter, Tammy (Dan) McCabe; son, Wesley (Kathy); grandchildren, Kenneth (Lisa), Arielle, Emma, Noah, Cohen, Calder, Layla and Trace; great-grandson, James; and sister, Christina Gallaway.

In addition to her parents, Colleen was predeceased by her sisters, Catherine Kolanko, Viola Nemeth and Sheila Tynski and brothers, Jimmy, Roddy and Terry McCarron and Frankie in infancy.

Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 29th from 4-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Theresa’s Church on Tuesday, May 30th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Evo DiPierro officiating. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff, nurses and doctors who treated her so well, especially those in the Palliative Care Unit and Hospice Cape Breton.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.com
