John A. McShaffery, Jr.

<p>John A. McShaffery, 73, of Moscow, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. He was the husband of Marijoan (Purcell) McShaffery and the couple was married for 50 years.</p><p><br></p><p>Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John A., Sr. and Etta (Doherty) McShaffery. John graduated from North Pocono High School in 1967 and retired in 2015 from Nivert Metal Supply in Throop after working there for 43 years.</p><p><br></p><p>As an avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed searching for the perfect buck and casting his line seeking his next “big catch” He also liked playing cards, golfing, trips to Canada and hanging with “the guys”. John was very active in the North Pocono community, serving on the Moscow Borough Council, as the past president of the Dandy Lion Little League and past president of the North Pocono Minisink Lions Club. Throughout his whole life, he cheered for Notre Dame football, the New York Yankees and the Green Bay Packers. For the last 14 months, John was thrilled to be a grandpa to JJ and looked forward to giving him bottles while babysitting.</p><p><br></p><p>In addition to his wife, Marijoan, John is survived by his children: Katie McShaffery of Moscow, John McShaffery and his wife Colleen of Moscow, Daniel McShaffery of Moscow; his grandson: JJ McShaffery of Moscow; his sisters: Kathleen Hoffman and her husband Dale, Noreen Blewitt and her husband Jack, Anne Harvey and her husband John; his brothers in law: Michael Purcell and his wife Diana, Carl Purcell and Arthur Jordan; his sister in law: Dawn Purcell; Helen Spoonhower and her children, who were like family to John and his boxer: Jack. He was also preceded in death by his sister: Maryclaire Jordan and his brother: Jerry McShaffery.</p><p><br></p><p>John's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the kind and exceptional care that was afforded to him while he was in their care.</p><p><br></p><p>The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 30th at 9:30 am from Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, LLC, 3 First St. in Spring Brook Twp. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 am in the St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Church Street in Moscow by Rev. Thomas M. Muldowney, pastor. Interment with Rite of Committal will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Covington Twp.</p><p><br></p><p>Visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 8:30 am to 9:30am, also at the funeral home.</p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to North Pocono Minisink Lions Club, P.O. Sorry for your loss..my mom..Margaret McShaffery Stevens was a first cousin to John's father Jack..married to Etta..as soon as I saw the obituary I knew he was a relative..not many McShafferys
