Joy Belle Blackwell, 96, of Buchanan Dam, Texas passed away peacefully Friday morning, April 26, 2013. She was born at the family home (farm) in Lockhart, Texas to T. Harry and Nolie Camille (Banyon) Brown on April 15, 1917, the fifth of six daughters. On September 14, 1936 Joy and Jesse (J.T.) Thomas Blackwell eloped to Austin, Texas and married in the Methodist Church by the Capitol, beginning their married life of 72 years together, raising two children. Those left to cherish her memory are daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Richard Gilbert, grandchildren, Keith Gilbert and wife Mendy, Sherry Huff and husband Mike, Bryan Gilbert and wife Natalie, James Blackwell and wife Teri, Ana Sanderson and husband Scott, sisters-in-law, Joyce Blackwell and Ada Tidwell, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, special nieces and nephews also survive. I addition to her husband JT, Joy was predeceased by son, Jay Blackwell, grandson, Stewart Blackwell, all five sisters and their husbands. Joy was the most loving and compassionate wife, mother and mama, always putting others before herself. During their working years together Joy and J.T. traveled with Halliburton to many places in and out of state, but always living in Texas, from Beaumont, Houston and Midland, Making many dear friends along the way. Upon retirement, in 1974 Joy and J.T. moved to their home at Buchanan Dam, Texas where they were both active with the Red Barn Community Center, Fire Department, Bass Busters Club and Bingo for many years. One of Joy's greatest pleasures was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren letting each of them know how much they were loved. She always looked forward to sharing birthdays, anniversaries, July 4th parades, Thanksgiving and Christmas, Family reunions and even just a simple visit. These are the special times that will always be remembered and treasured. Joy's talents are many, including painting beautiful ceramics, cross-stitching blankets and quilt tops and being a wonderful cook. She made the best brown beans, banana pudding, orange slice bars and M&M cookies. She was definitely named appropriately, as Joy is what she gave to all of us.
