Phyllis R Myers Obituary

Phyllis R. Myers, 90, of Kingsland, Texas passed away April 18, 2019. She was born to Roy and Mary (Jacobson) Shaffer on July 31, 1928 in Watonga, Oklahoma.

Phyllis grew up in Oklahoma and took up HAM radio operation at an early age. She ran radio communication during disaster relief and during the frequent tornados that plagued the state. In her mid-twenties she moved to Houston, Texas and continued her work with HAM radio. Phyllis founded the Maritime Mobile Amateur Radio Club, at one time a worldwide organization, that allowed merchant seamen to communicate with their families while at sea. During this time, many friends were made. There were many trips to the port where grateful sailors would show their appreciation for her work with lovely exotic gifts. Phyllis also published the semi-annual newsletter for the club.

Shortly after moving to Houston, a man named John Myers, also a HAM, introduced Phyllis to her first husband, Donald Riblet. John would serve as the best man in their wedding, as well as the best man when Donald and Phyllis renewed their marital vows after twenty-five years. After the death of Phyllis’ husband, as well as the death of John’s wife, the two friends came together and were married. They have spent the last thirty-one years happily married in Kingsland, Texas. Phyllis was very active in the lady’s group at the Kingsland Community Church and always volunteered in the church’s annual rummage sale. She was an amazing cook, and she loved preparing meals for her family.

She is survived by her husband of thirty-one years, John Myers, son Jeff Riblet and his wife Valerie of Portsmouth, Virginia, step daughters, Linda and Lee Myers of Marble Falls, Texas, grandsons, Donald and Cameron Riblet of Portsmouth, Virginia as well as nieces, and nephews, extended family and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Violet, Dorothy, Helen and Elsie. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Riblet.
