Mary McConnell died, at the age of 86, on June 28, 2014 in her home in Llano after a long illness. She was preceded in death by two husbands, one daughter, both parents, and a brother. She is survived by two daughters, one son-in-law, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a sister. Mary grew up in New York City. Upon graduation from Queens College, she boarded a train to El Paso, Texas where she worked at Houchen House and met her first husband. They earned Masters of Divinity degrees at Duke University in North Carolina and worked as Directors of Christian Education in Odessa and El Paso, Texas. The family moved to Houston, Texas and while her family was her first priority, Mary also earned her Texas Teacher's Certificate and taught school. She served her church, St. Luke's UMC in Houston in many capacities. Following the deaths of her first husband and daughter, Mary spent many years working with the A.D. Players in Houston. Mary's second husband died of cancer shortly after their marriage. Mary was beloved by family, friends, students, and peers. Mary moved to Llano ten years ago to enjoy living in a small town. She loved Llano and was particularly appreciative of the welcome and the innumerable kindnesses the people of Llano gave her. She loved the people she met at the golf course. She loved the arts scene in Llano, especially the music at Fuel Coffeehouse. She loved the church home she found at Lutie Watkins Memorial UMC. Her children would like to thank the people of Llano for all they did to make Mary's last years such good ones.
