Dana M. Lougee Obituary

Presque Isle – Dana M. Lougee passed away peacefully on May 25, 2023 from complications of Parkinson’s disease at Mars Hill Continuing Care.

Dana was born on June 3, 1939 in Littleton, Maine, the son of Lauris Lougee and Marion (Davidson) Lougee.

Dana Lougee was devoted to the people and community of Presque Isle. As a proud member of the even prouder class of 1957, his years at

PIHS were rich with friendships and memories made with his cross country, basketball and track and field teammates. He attended the

University of Maine, Presque Isle, graduating with a BS Degree in secondary education. He competed on the university’s basketball and

baseball teams, and was a member of the Mu Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi fraternity. Dana also received a Master’s Degree from UMaine in

American Government.

After college, Dana taught in SAD #1 for thirty-four years, first at the Training Elementary School, then at Cunningham Junior High. In his years

as a government teacher at PIHS, he instilled many students with the value of civic engagement. He opened every class with, “What’s

happening in this wonderful world of ours?” and he expected his students to have answers. At PIHS, Dana also coached freshman basketball, JV

baseball and was senior class advisor. He took his classes to see the world as far away as Washington D.C. and as close as the PI court house.

During his years serving on the Presque Isle City Council, Dana helped develop the planning of the Presque Isle Bike Path and many other

projects for the city he loved. Dana was a member of the Presque Isle Elks Club and the Elks Club Scholarship Committee. He coached CYO

basketball for PI youth, and was a member of the PI Recreation men’s basketball and softball teams, named the “Hummingbirds.” He was a

member of the PI Fish & Game Club, the PI Snowmobile Club, where he helped with suppers and trail grooming, and he was a member of the PI

Curling Club League.

After retiring from teaching, Dana worked for and with his good friend Neale Buck at Buck’s Market, cutting wood and trimming Christmas trees

for Neale’s business. Neale has been waiting for Dana to join him and continue their cribbage games and to bring his fishing pole ready to wet a

line.

Dana and Sue spent wonderful years enjoying their family, friends and life in Presque Isle. Dana’s deepest pride was in being a father and

grandfather. He enjoyed being able to travel with his family, especially ski trips to Mont-Sainte-Anne and Mont Farlagne, the days at the camp

at St. Froid, and weeks at Higgins Beach every summer with his children and later with his grandsons. Dana and his son, Mark, enjoyed many

fishing and camping trips on local rivers, as well as hunting at the Buck’s “old camp” at Scopan Lake.

Dana will be remembered for helping anyone in need, his great wit, his dry humor and his quick come-backs, delivered with a grin. He cared for

this world, and he tended it well.

Dana was predeceased by his parents, as well as his brothers, Lewellyn, Raymond and George Lougee, and his half sister, Lorraine Violette.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan (Gibson) Lougee, his son, Mark D. Lougee and his wife, Natasha, of Casco, Maine, his daughter,

Elizabeth L. Greely of South Portland, Maine and his grandchildren, James, Daniel, Joseph, Cameron, Zachary, five great-grandchildren, 4

nephews and 3 nieces. He is also survived by his brother, David Lougee of Titusville, Florida.

As Dana wished for no extra fuss, there will be no funeral. A reception will be held at Presque Isle High school in the cafeteria on June 11 th , from

2:00 to 4:00 p.m., for a chance to visit with the family.

Sue, Mark and Liz thank his caregivers at the Northern Light Continuing Care in Mars Hill for the professionalism, comfort and grace they

brought Dana during these last three years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Presque Isle Elks Christmas Dinner or the Presque Isle High School Athletic Department.
