Mary Ellen Shorter Obituary

Mary Ellen Lacy Shorter (93),of Glen Daniels, passed away on May 23, 2023 after a short illness.
Mary took her final breath at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.
Prior to her being placed in hospice care, she was living at The Oak Hill Place in Oak Hill, WV. She really enjoyed living in the home where she made new friends consisting of staff and other residents whom also lived there. She spent much of her time working her puzzles and working her "Find a word" books.

Mary was born in Glen Daniel, WV. She came from a large family that she loved very much.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Shorter, her parents, William Earl and
Geneviève Lacy, four brothers, Richard Lacy, Leonard Gordon, Robert Lacy and William Earl Lacy
Jr. and three sisters, Geraldine Lacy, Gertrude Carr and Juanita Meadows, daughter-in-law,
Donna Shorter and son-in-law, Pat Tchou who just recently passed away as well.

She was Survived by her four siblings, Francis Rowland, Violet Varney, Charles Lacy and Robert Lacy. She has four living children, Shirley Tchou of Ohio, Arnold (Alice) Shorter of Ohio, Danny (Sherri) Shorter of Ohio and Jack (Goldie) Shorter of WV. She will also be missed by her Grandchildren, Christopher and wife Meli (Koutsovitis), Michael and wife Erin (Stenson) Tchou, Jeremy and wife Madeline (Boyd) Tchou, Brandy and husband Chris Rotch, Aaron and wife Nicole Shorter, Alex and wife Heather Shorter, Shawn Thaxton and husband Chris Madden, and J.D. Shorter and fiancé, Lori Cogar. Also she had several Great-grandchildren, Hank, Carl, Katie, Skyler, Lizzie, Abbi, Ben, Brooke, Brianna, Daniel, Milo,Teo, Daphne, Charlotte, Gavin and Zoe. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and friends she has made during her stay at the Oak Hill Place. She always looked forward to getting her cards from her long lasting
friend/sister-in-law, Mary Utt.

Mary worked as a Nurse Aide at Cleveland Metro Hospital for many years. However, her
favorite job was being a homemaker and a mother to her children and wife to her husband.
Through her years Mary enjoyed sewing, crochet, working in her many flower gardens and
caring for birds that would make their home in the many bird houses she and Carl had built
together. She loved them all and would make sure they were fed as well. Mary always put her
family above anything else. She was precious to so many and would always put a smile on your
face when you would see her. She will be missed by so many.

A special "Thank You," to all the staff and residents at The Oak Hill Place for all the care, love
and support you gave to our dear mother. We could not ask for a more caring home away from
home.
A special "Thank You" to Hospice- Bower house for all the TLC that they gave her.

A funeral Service will take place for Mary on Friday June 2nd, 2023 at the Melton Mortuary Chapel beginning at 2 O'Clock PM. The family will receive visitors beginning at 12 Noon. Burial will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, West Virginia.
