Billy E. Scroggins Obituary

Billy E. Scroggins, 89, of Monticello, died Monday, May 22, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Scroggins was a native of Dewitt, a resident of Hughes and Parkdale for most of his life; a former resident of Hot Springs, and has been a resident of Monticello for the past five years. He attended Hughes High School, where he was a football player. Mr. Scroggins was a Veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. After he was discharged from the service in 1955, he purchased a cotton picker and a tractor and began farming in Snyder. Over the 50 years that he farmed, he harvested wheat, rice, cotton, and beans, maintained fish ponds, and was a cattle farmer. He was in his late 70s when he retired from farming and discovered his enjoyment of traveling and working jigsaw puzzles with his grandchildren.   Mr. Scroggins was a former President and Parkdale School Board Member for over 20 years and an avid Razorback fan. He loved the Lord, was a good Christian man, and was a member of the Hot Springs Baptist Church. He loved his wife, children, and grandchildren and enjoyed talking and learning about the Lord.

He is preceded in death by a son, Billy Gene Scroggins; a daughter, Patty Scroggins; his parents, Isaac Franklin and Flora Nell Booher Scroggins; two brothers, Isaac Scroggins and Joe Scroggins; two sisters, Flora Johnson and Annie Mae Scroggins and his first wife, Nora Rich Scroggins.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Betty Johnson Scroggins of Monticello; four sons, Freddy Dean Scroggins and wife, Tresia, of Monticello; Tony Hummel and wife, Patty, of Forrest City, Illinois, Jerry Hummel of Chillicothe, Illinois and Paul Hummel and wife, Shelia, of Lake Village; a daughter, Sharon Harrison of Monticello; a brother, Jimmy Roy Scroggins of Crossett; 15 grandchildren, Lindsey, Danielle, Michael, Phillip, Steven, Jennifer, Megan, Kasey, Richard, Vanessa, Chelsea, Eric, Josh, Tiffany, and Becca; 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 10 a.m., Thursday, May 25, 2023, in the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kelly Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Parkdale Cemetery. Pallbearers are Tony Hummel, Jerry Hummel, Lance Kling, Braden Forrest, David Johnson, and Richard Hummel. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Hummel, Devon Scroggins, Craig Shackelford, Mike Riley, and Robert Scroggins. Memorials may be made to St. Jude, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105. The family would like to thank Arkansas Hospice and their caregivers for all of the love and care given to Mr. Scroggins. 

Visitation will be 9:30 – 10 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel.
