Shaoxin Chen, 87, of Essex Junction, VT, and formerly of Fuzhou, China, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2023, at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT.

Born in Shanghai, China, in November 1935, Shaoxin exhibited remarkable talent in art, particularly dance. She received classical ballet training at a young age and worked as a dancer in the Fujian Provincial Song and Dance Troupe, eventually becoming a choreographer and dance teacher. Over her 30-year career, Shaoxin created numerous award-winning dance works that were deeply cherished and admired by audiences.

Fifteen years ago, Shaoxin immigrated to the United States and settled in Colchester, later making her home in Essex Junction, VT. She continued to share her love for dance with the Chinese community in Vermont and actively participated in Chinese school activities, becoming an integral part of the school community.

In addition to her passion for dance, Shaoxin cultivated talents in playing the piano and cooking. She also devoted herself to raising two exceptional grandsons, instilling in them values of hard work, gratitude, and respect. Above all else, she was a devoted mother and grandmother who showered her family with love and exceptional care. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to her family and her ability to find joy in life’s simplest moments.

Throughout her time with us, Shaoxin touched the lives of many with her warm heart and gentle spirit. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Dongdong; son, Xiaonong; son-in-law, Hongfei; daughter-in-law, Shan Cheng; and grandsons, Henry and Nathan. She is also survived by her step-brothers, Shaosu, Shaozhong, and Shaoming; step-sisters, Shaohua and Shaojie; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Shaoxin’s life will be held on May 27 at 9:30 AM at Faith United Methodist Church in South Burlington, VT.
