Edell King Jowers Obituary

Mother Edell King Jowers, daughter of the late Mr. Dock King and Mrs. Sallie Bell King was born July 1,1922 in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. On Friday, May 19, 2023 she left all the troubles of this world behind and made her heavenly exit, leaving a permanent void in the hearts of those whom she loved most.

Mother was educated in the public schools of Chesterfield County, learning the basic educational necessities for the journey that would lay ahead. Upon graduating, she immediately assumed the role of a dedicated homemaker, caretaker for her children and husband, and helping hand to her community. Year in and year out, she hosted summer lunch programs for the children in her community that were in need; they always knew that all they had to do was make it to the pecan tree— and they would have all the food that they needed. Hard work, dedication, determination, and love; these were the keys to her being all that she was to her family and community for the entirety of her adult life. She was a woman of high standard and class, and was not reserved about her belief in upholding that reputation. She loved to look good, and be made up— in fact, no outfit was complete without a pair of her ear buttons. And furthermore, she never hesitated to impart that same spirit of excellence into the young people who she fostered for decades until her health would no longer allow.

Mother confessed her faith in Jesus Christ at a young age, and became a devoted member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a member until the time of her passing. Down through the years, she served tirelessly in many capacities within the church that included, but were not limited to: Sunday School Secretary for over 50 years, leader of the Senior Choir, and Mother of the Church. However, it was not the titles that were important to her, as she was always willing to serve in whatever capacity the Lord needed her; there was not anything that she would not do for the Lord and her church family. When she was not devoting her life selflessly to the care of others, you would often find her exercising her “green thumb” in her garden, participating with her Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #234, baking chocolate layer cake and pies, picking pecans, raking her yard, or contributing in some way to the upbringing of her beautiful grandchildren! There is a plethora of words to describe the woman that she was; however, even all of those words fused together would fall short of adequately describing what the world has lost. A family has lost its Matriarch, many have lost a friend, and above all else the earthly Kingdom of God has lost a most devoted vessel. Edell operated with a grace and warmth that could never, ever have been taught. The love that she radiated with was a gift from God, and her heavenly exit leaves each of our worlds just a little less bright.

In addition to her parents, Edell was preceded in death by: her husband, Mr. Kemp Jowers; her son, Mr. Burl Junior Jowers; her sisters, Ms. Naomi King Jowers and Ms. Geneva King; as well as her brothers, Mr. J.D. King and Mr. Coyte Lee King, Sr.

Now that she has received her crown, Mother leaves behind to continue her legacy of love, her children: Mrs. Mary (Emanuel) Bristow, Ms. Cinderella Jowers, and Mr. Aaron (Sandra) Jowers all of Jefferson, SC; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild: Niko Bristow. Also left behind are her siblings: Mrs. Beulah (Henry) James of Philadelphia, PA, Ms. Elizabeth Sullivan of Richmond, VA, and Mr. Faye Lee King of Blacksburg, SC; a sister-in-love, Ms. Mattie Jowers; a special friend, Ms. Lenora Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other close relatives and friends by whom she will be sorely missed.
