Michelle Ann Boyd Obituary

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of beloved wife and mother, Michelle Boyd. After a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, Mom passed into the loving presence of her saviour in Minnedosa, MB on Thursday, May 18th, 2023.

Michelle Ann was born on Tuesday, December 9th, 1958, to Tom and Sheila Smith of Clanwilliam, MB. The third of six children, Mom attended the Minnedosa North School until Grade 6, finishing junior high at the newly built Tanner’s Crossing School in Minnedosa. Graduating from Minnedosa Collegiate Institute (MCI) in 1975, she went on to obtain her bookkeeper's certification at Assiniboine Community College (ACC) in Brandon, MB.

Mom worked for the accounting firm, Bardsley & Spencer, for several years and later worked part-time as a bookkeeper for the Minnedosa Pharmacy until she retired in 2000 due to poor health. Mom also spent many years doing taxes for private clients.

Mom loved her community and enjoyed helping to better the lives of her friends and neighbours. At various times in her life, she was an active member of the TCS Parents' Advisory Council, PULSE (Program Using Lifelong Skills in Education) and Play First – both a part of  Minnedosa’s Adult/Family Literacy and EAL program, and UCT. Mom was also a child sponsor through Plan International for many years and has photos of the several children she helped throughout the decades.

Like her dad, Mom could talk to anyone. She was always real with everyone. Always Michelle. Mom had a very witty sense of humour. She could find the funny or ironic side of any situation and felt strongly that the ability to laugh at oneself and the world in general was a key aspect to coping with the many challenges of life.

Hobbies Mom enjoyed included gardening, reading, camping, live music, creating art, and traveling – especially with her husband Dwight on his Harleys.

Mom was predeceased by her brothers, Brent and David Smith, and her father, Tom Smith.

Staying behind to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 31 years Dwight Boyd; children Amanda (Stephan) Wang of Toronto, ON, Thomas James (Kelleen) Boyd of Brandon, MB, Catherine (Dustin) Ast of Whitewood, SK, stepson Thomas Brent (Sarah) Boyd of Alexander, MB; daughter of the heart, Rachelle Kaasgaard of Rapid City, MB; grandchildren Alex, Wesson, Wyatt, Riley, and Ronan; grandchildren of the heart, Keiva and Nikolas; mother, Sheila Smith of Clanwilliam, MB; siblings, Steven (Marie) Smith of Clanwilliam, MB, Judy (Barry) Kingdon of Minnedosa, MB, Joan (Murray) Gurr of Miniota, MB; as well as several in-laws and extended family.

Mom’s wishes were to acknowledge and thank her dearest husband, Dwight, for the constant faithfulness with which he took care of her for the duration of their marriage – especially in the last couple of years. A more attentive, loving husband she couldn’t have asked for.

A special thanks to Mom’s dear friend, Lynn Johnston, who spent numerous nights with Mom and was of invaluable assistance to the entire family.

We would like to thank the countless doctors for their excellent, compassionate, and knowledgeable care of Mom throughout the years. We would like to especially thank Dr. Brian Penner, Dr. David Rush, and Dr. Nolan Brackenreed. Thank you also, to the nurses of the Minnedosa District Hospital.

An internment will take place at Boyd Cemetery in Bethany, MB;  A funeral service will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Minnedosa Evangelical Covenant Church.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to either the Kidney Foundation of Canada or Cancer Care Manitoba.
