Steve Stavros Panagoulis Obituary

Steve Stavros Panagoulis, age 77 passed away on May 16, 2023, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH from lung cancer and dementia. He resided much of his married life in Plymouth, NH and most recently at Highland Colony in Holderness, NH.

Steve was born on August 5, 1945, in Nashua, NH, the son of Charles and Rita (Kofopoulos) Panagoulis. He grew up in the restaurant business from an early age starting with his parents’ Riverview Restaurant in Nashua and loved pleasing all his customers. Other busy restaurants that Steve owned were the Monarch Diner in Milford, the Peppermill Restaurant in Amherst, Lionel’s Market in Plymouth, and Steve’s Restaurant in Rumney. The last two he owned with his wife, Janet for 25 years. All the restaurants were very popular, especially due to Steve’s influence.

Steve served in the US Navy on the USS Long Beach from 1962 to 1964. He was actually on the same ship for a short while with his brother, Tom.

Steve was passionate about politics and always tried to do the right thing for his constituents. He was Selectman of Plymouth for 6 years, Grafton County Commissioner for 10 years, serving with his good friends, Ray Burton and Mike Cryans, President of the NH Association of Counties, along with being a board member of the Municipal Bond Bank in Concord. Steve also served as chairman of the Grafton County Republican Party and one of his greatest achievements was to host a dinner at Plymouth State College in 1996 for all the candidates running for President. Jack Kemp, Bob Dole, Pat Buchanan, Lamar Alexander and others attended as they knew that New Hampshire was a critical race for the primary election. That surely was an entertaining and eventful evening!

Steve loved his heritage and his family. There were many gatherings of his “Big Fat Greek Family” with lots of dancing, good food and much laughter. Greek Easter was so much fun as was Christmas, Cousins’ Day in Hollis, July 4th in Wells, and our annual Labor Day Campout at Highland Colony. OPA!

Steve is survived by Janet, his wife of 47 years, his daughters, Sarah (Dana), Alexa (Stewart) and Eleni (Wade) and his beautiful grandchildren, Alex, Alicia, Kimberly, Isabella, Sophia, Collin and Autumn. “We love you Papou!” He is also survived by his sisters, Anna and Christine (Stuart), his brother, Tom (Bette), his sister-in-law, Jeanne and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son, Christopher, his parents, Charles & Rita, his sister, Helen, his brother, George and his brother-in-law, Jim.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at both the Grafton County Nursing Home and Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health along with his caregivers at home for their unending love and support.

There will be a Celebration of Life at The Barn on the Pemi, 341 Daniel Webster Highway, Plymouth, NH on June 15th at 4:00 PM.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory be made to Bridge House Ladders Thrift, 16 Main Street, Plymouth, NH 03264 or Pemi-Baker Hospice & Home Health, 101 Boulder Point Drive, Suite 3, Plymouth, NH 03264.
