Marilyn Jean Sawyer Obituary

Presque Isle - Marilyn J. Sawyer, 92, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Northern Light A.R. Gould. She was born September 1, 1930, in Washburn and raised in Crouseville, Maine, the daughter of J. Bearl and Flora (McIntyre) Flewelling. She married Vernon “Buz” Sawyer, in Crouseville, on June 21, 1948.

Marilyn worked outside her home in retail at Weinbergs clothing store and Sears & Roebuck in ladies’ fashion during the 1950’s and 1960’s. In the early 1970’s, Marilyn was employed as an assistant to Dr. Paul Hamlin, urologist, for over twenty years until his retirement.

Marilyn attended and was very active at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, singing in the choir, helping with church receptions, knitting for the prayer shawl ministry, and as a member of the church ladies’ group.

Marilyn was very talented with her knitting, sewing clothes for herself and her daughter, needlepoint, cross stitch, paintings on canvas, caneing, and basket weaving. There was nothing she was not willing to learn. Marilyn also enjoyed their family camps with family and friends, at Portage Lake and then later at Spua Pan Lake.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Laurie Berry of Presque Isle, her son Jeff Sawyer and his wife Peggy of Castle Hill, her daughter-in-law, Joy Sawyer of Concord New Hampshire, grandchildren, Shawn Berry and his wife Nicole, Matthew Sawyer and his wife Deana, Jeremiah Sawyer and Lacey Sawyer, as well as great grandchildren, Christopher, Lucy, Isabella and Jackson Sawyer, Parker Sawyer, and Tanner Smith. She also leaves behind step grandchildren, Rachel and Danna, and step great-grandchildren: Victoria and Sydney, a sister Patricia Shafman of Elkins, West Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by her husband, Vernon, a son, Michael, her son-in-law, Jim Berry, siblings, Muriel Johnson and her husband Gustaf, Kenneth Flewelling, and Marguerite Townsend.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Northern Light, A.R. Gould for all the care and compassion shown to mom and the family during this time.

There will be no service. The family asks that those who wish to remember Marilyn in a special way may make gifts in her memory payable to the music program at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 992, Presque Isle, ME 04769). Arrangements in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, ME 04769.
