Virgil Lloyd Farrar Obituary

HODGDON- Virgil Lloyd Farrar passed into the arms of his Savior on April 25, 2023, at Madigan Health Care in Houlton, Maine. Virgil was born to Lloyd Farrar and Goldie Knapp Farrar on April 3, 1938, in North Amity, Maine.

Virgil attended elementary school in North Amity and then graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in Houlton in 1956. On June 14, 1958, Virgil married Marilyn Smith. They would have celebrated their 65th anniversary this coming June.

Virgil was a jack of many trades. He was raised on a farm and thoroughly enjoyed working in the woods, utilizing his carpentry skills, and planting and harvesting gardens and squash fields. Virgil served in the National Guard for six years; built bridges on I-95, and drove for UPS. He was a very talented carpenter who built several homes and apartments. He was the clerk of the works/ building inspector for the Hodgdon, Houlton, and Southern Aroostook school systems, the U.S. Customs building in Houlton, and the state police barracks in Houlton. He was also a board member for Eastern Maine Electric Co-op for fifteen years.

Virgil was a creative prankster! He was famous for his shoe tree in Hodgdon that was featured in The Boston Globe, Down East Magazine, and other publications. Virgil also had four mailboxes on one vertical pole at his home - (top to bottom) Taxes, Bills, Junk Mail, Mail. Virgil always enjoyed seeing tourists stop to take a picture.

Virgil will be greatly missed by his wife Marilyn; children - Vaughn (Shelly) Farrar of Hodgdon and Nancy (Mark) Scott of Waymart, PA; grandchildren - Lacey Farrar, Drew (Chelsea) Farrar, Shiloh (Tyrone) Young, Elias (Kiersten) Scott, Fiona Scott, Ciara (Matthew) Harmon, Brianna Scott, Autumn Scott, and Consuelo (Jomar) Rodriguez; four great grandchildren; sister Muriel Dwyer; and brother Linwood (Sylvia) Farrar.

Virgil was predeceased by his father Lloyd, his mother Goldie, his sisters Bernice Manuel and Pauline Ledger, and his brother Rodney Farrar.

Many thanks to all who had a part in Virgil’s care - staff at Houlton Regional Hospital, Madigan Health Care, Southern Aroostook EMS, and social services. They were all wonderful!
