Wendi Ann Miller Obituary

Wendi Ann Miller, picture framer, cave diver, quick draw, poker maven, and transgender rights pioneer of Pittsburgh, aged three quarters of a century, passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at her home. She was born on July 14, 1947 and was the daughter of the late William Henry Miller Jr. and Marion Cleary Miller.

Her picture frame business, Miller Frame, operated for half a century, and the shop was located on Centre Ave in East Liberty for 40 years.

Wendi earned a BFA in Sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University in 1972, she was a guest on the Ricki Lake show in 1996.

In 1995, she worked with an ad hoc committee of the Pittsburgh Human Rights Commission to modify legislation to protect transgender and gender variant persons from discrimination in housing and employment.

The City Council of Pittsburgh declared April 8th, 2023 to be Wendi Miller day in honor of her contributions to the arts and human right activism in the city and beyond.

She is survived by her life partner Dorcas Evans-Miller, her son Cooper, daughter-in-law Juliette Richey-Miller, and her cat Kelly. Also survived by two sisters, Linda Ward and Edith Toner. 

Her remains were generously donated for medical research to Humanity Gift Registry.
