Thomas J Austin Obituary

Thomas J Austin, a beloved husband, father, cousin, uncle, grandpa, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 28 at home in his native Howell with family by his side. He was 73.

An active and social person throughout his life, Tom was never one to stand still. Whether woodworking, biking, gardening, or spending time with family and friends, Tom made sure to get the most out of life.

Born on September 10, 1949, in Howell, Tom graduated from Howell High School before attending Central Michigan University. It was at CMU where Tom met his wife, Ruth Anne, the love of his life and unwavering supporter. They would marry on August 12, 1972, most recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. Shortly thereafter, Tom and Ruth had two children — Chad and Meredith.

Tom was a wonderful family man. More than anything else, he and Ruth Anne created a beautiful life together, filled with love and happiness. The lessons, guidance, and example he and Ruth set for their children made them who they are today. Tom loved his daughter-in-law, Kelli, and son-in-law, Shawn, and found incredible joy spending time with his grandchildren — Katelyn, Cole, Quinn and Malcolm. Teaching them woodworking, having water fights, and showing interest in their learning were some of his most cherished memories.

Tom held a fierce belief in the power and importance of education. During his 34 years with Howell Public Schools, serving as a teacher, counselor, vice-principal, and coach, he made a lasting impact on generations of Howell students and families. He loved his role as an educator, making sure every student received the attention needed to succeed. Whether going over classes, prowling the halls, or counseling, he cherished his time with students and respected his colleagues. Tom loved coaching at HHS, especially basketball. He was proud of what many of his players accomplished on and, more importantly, off the court.

He always found time to be with friends. So much so that he started up a Saturday morning breakfast club, so they had an excuse to get together every week. You can still find them gathering twice a week sharing stories, 20 years later.

Tom loved to spend time in his woodshop where he created works of art in the form of furniture, toys, boxes, and countless other pieces. These will now be cherished by many. Later in life, he found joy in bicycling. You could find him riding around Howell on his recumbent bike, with a fondness for the Howell City Park where he grew up swimming. He was proud of biking 100 miles in one day while wintering in Florida.

Tom, his brother, John, and sister, Marcia — who lost their father when they were young — were raised by a tough and loving mother, also an educator. She instilled in them the importance of family, hard work, and advocacy for marginalized groups. These values stayed in the forefront of their lives throughout their families, careers, volunteerism, and political beliefs.

Perhaps the biggest battle for Tom came at age 19 in the form of Type 1 diabetes. This would result in daily dedication to maintaining a healthy quality of life, which he achieved with grace. From Marcia donating him a kidney in 2001, to John’s never wavering support, and Ruth Anne and his children’s constant advocacy, Tom was able to live years beyond measure. We are forever grateful.

A Celebration of Life will be held April 13, 2023, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Chemung Hills Golf Club & Banquet Center in Howell. Reflections by family will be given at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
