Mary P. Mercincavage Obituary

Mary P. Mercincavage, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by family at Wilson Hospital on Thursday, March 30th, 2023. She was welcomed by her children, Denise and Kurt Mercincavage; her parents, John and Anna Iwankiw; her brother, John Rushana; in-laws; Charles and Julia Mercincavage and brother-in-law, Edward Mercincavage.
She is survived by a close loving family, that includes soulmate and husband of 57 years, George  Mercincavage; her daughters, Lisa Roys and Kim Rusnak; her sons-in-law, Jerry Roys and David Rusnak; her grandchildren, Ariel (Kasyn) Judd, John (Vanessa Scott) Roys, Anastasia Rusnak, and Sophie Rusnak; her great-granddaughters, Nataliya and Kateryna Judd; her sisters, Anna Mackin and Olga Dutton; her brothers and sisters-in-laws; Patricia Mercincavage, C. Michael and Joyce Mercincavage , Robert and Patricia Mercincavage; Godson, Michael K. Mercincavage, as well as several nieces and nephews, the extended “Mercincavage” family, along with several lifetime friends.
Mary grew up on the family farm where she acquired a strong work ethic, an appreciation for her Ukrainian heritage, and a love for the outdoors. After graduating from Candor Central School District and attending Broome “Tech,” Mary worked as a lab technician and eventually a medical office assistant. She took time off to be a mother and returned to the work force as a “lunch lady” in the Chenango Forks School District where she genuinely enjoyed serving the children alongside her work friends. Mary was a most gentle soul who loved spending time at her family’s farm property, where she tended amazing gardens. She enjoyed sharing her produce with family and friends and was most proud of her pumpkin patch that yielded some that she painted and many others to share.
Mary enjoyed the simple things in life, finding peace in nature, eating breakfast with family after church, camping, and joy in watching games that ranged from her lifelong love of the Dallas Cowboys to her (grand)children’s sporting events. It was not uncommon to find her in the stands on even the rainiest of days. Mary was immensely proud of her family, sharing her traditions and delicious cooking with them. In addition, she looked forward each year to gathering family and friends at an annual Octoberfest where laughs flowed as freely as drinks. Mary was always ready to dispense a smile, warm hug, or a nonjudgmental ear for anyone. Her family thanks her for these traits, which she never lost despite her struggles, for which they are forever grateful. She will be missed dearly during this well-deserved rest. The family would like to thank the Broome Oncology Center for their compassionate care through the years and the Wilson Hospital 4th Floor staff and Palliative Care Team for making the end of this journey more peaceful.
Mary’s friends and family will be received at THOMAS J. SHEA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 137 Robinson Street, Binghamton, from 5:00-7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 4th. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Francis of Assisi, 1031 Chenango Street, Binghamton, NY, on Wednesday, April 5th. Burial at Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City, will follow. In honor of Mary’s kind and giving spirit, the family requests that you share a smile, a warm hug, or a donation to someone in need.
