The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still  waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the  shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Barbara Vera Smith (McLean) aged 89 passed away peacefully on March 29, 2023.

She was born on March 2, 1934 to Norman and Ethel McLean.

Life on the farm made for a happy childhood and many good memories of family gatherings and playing with cousins and younger sister Betty. Especially in the days before hydro, farm life required a lot of work—water to haul, big meals to prepare, cows to milk, milk to separate, and animals to feed.

Barbara attended school at Londesboro, riding in a horse and buggy or winter cutter. By about Grade 6, Barbara had horses she would race on the way home with other kids and their horses. Barbara attended grades 10 to 12 in Pilot Mound where she met her lifelong friend, Hazel Mayo (Harris).

After high school, Barbara attended Normal School, as Teacher’s College was known at the time. She paid $100 for her tuition, which was funded by her 4H calves. Her Normal School training ended at Christmas when she was asked to go teach at Seven Oaks School in North Winnipeg because there was a shortage of teachers.  She remained there until graduation in June. After her first job at Flora School, she returned to Londesboro School where she could live at home and help on the farm in the evenings.

Around this time, George Smith began visiting Barbara. In winter, he’d park the car at the highway and ski to the farm. They were married in a December wedding on the farm. After a quick honeymoon in Mesa, Arizona, began their married life in Kenora, Ontario where Betty, John and Jim were born over the next three years. Agreeing that the farm was a wonderful place to raise children, George and Barbara left Kenora. They bought an old schoolhouse for $200, moved it onto the farm and installed hydro.

Barbara began teaching again with her mother, Ethel helping with young Jim’s childcare. She taught until Easter 1980, a long and fulfilling career. Never one to sit idle, Barbara spent her retirement as a florist, keeping a shop on the farm and definitely keeping busy. Both Barbara and George enjoyed trips south in winter and hosting “Seniors Picnics” in the summers.

Barbara’s last years were spent on Beveridge Street in Pilot Mound where she valued the companionship of kind neighbours and family members. Always hospitable, Barbara never let anyone leave hungry.

Barbara is fondly remembered by sister Betty Leon; children Betty (Don), Jim (Jane); daughter-in-law Sheila; grandchildren Maureen (Michael), Mavis (Mark), Amy (Josh), Ryan (Adrienne), Walter (Terri), Julia (David), Reilly (Sofia), Allison (Michael), Connor, Cole and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren Jessica, Wayne, Wyatt, Charity, Jacinda, Marek, Kara, Serena, Tyson, Madeline, Zachary, Paityn, Logan, Thea, Reid, Hayden, Dylan, Madison, Tanner, Kyler, Elayne, Daniel, Kaitlyn, and Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son John and husband George.
