Susan J. Royal

BUCKEYE, AZ – Susan J. Royal, age 68, of Buckeye, AZ, died March 29, 2023 after a 14-month private battle with cancer.  She was born in Mason City, IA on July 6, 1954 the daughter of James and Mary Norvell.  Her parents preceded her in death as did a brother, Steven Norvell.  Her youngest brother, Thomas Norvell of Chicago survives.  Growing up, she lived in many locations in the eastern United States and spent most of her formative years in Stockton, CA.  She was an Honored Queen in Jobs Daughters and worked at the University of the Pacific.

She worked at the Union National Bank in Macomb, IL and moved to Springfield, IL shortly before she was married.  She worked for 43 years at the Horace Mann Insurance Company (all in the Marketing Department).  She retired in 2020.  Her dream job was being a grandmother.

She volunteered for Lincoln land Dare, Junior Achievement, American Lung Association and was a bingo volunteer for Big Brother/Big Sister.  She also taught 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School at Laurel United Methodist Church for over 25 years.  She loved to travel, golf, cook and spend time with family.  She was also quite a good photographer.

While in Arizona, she joined the Sun City Festival Women’s Golf League and co-chaired her 1st golf tournament while battling cancer.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years Chris, son Brian (Kaitlyn), grandkids Joshua and Hannah Royal of Frisco, TX, mother-in-law Eileen Royal of Springfield, brothers in law, Greg Royal of Springfield, John (Teresa) Royal of Gravois Mills, MO, niece Bryn Royal of Macomb, IL and nephew Mike (Amy) and cousin Bear Royal of Milan, IL.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Laurel United Methodist Church in Springfield, IL on Tuesday, April 18th with family visitation beginning at 5pm and the service following at 6pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to Laurel United Methodist Church at 631 South Grand Avenue West, Springfield IL   62704 or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E.
