Viola Leialoha Naone Cashman Obituary

Viola Leialoha Naone Cashman, 77, passed away on March 19, 2023 in ʻEwa, ʻOahu, surrounded by her family.


Viola grew up in Haneoʻo, Hāna, Maui. She attended Hāna school from grades K-6 and later attended the Kamehameha Schools in Kapālama where she graduated with the class of 1963. It was at the Kamehameha Schools where she met the love of her life, Edward C. Cashman. She and Edward were married in 1965 and they raised their family in Ewa Beach, Oʻahu.


Viola worked at a number of places throughout her life -Honolulu Federal Savings and Loan, Wackenhut, Hilton Hawaiian Village, Hawaiʻi Legislature, the Kamehameha Schools, and the Department of Education. She went back to college later in life and earned an undergraduate degree in English, teacher certification, and a master’s degree in educational foundations from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. In 1995, Viola returned to Hāna to work as a teacher and student-services coordinator at Hāna School. She also developed Haʻaheo o Hāna no nā Keiki, a community-based enrichment program for the children of Hāna and worked with the Maui Food Bank.


Viola enjoyed reading, traveling, lauhala weaving, canoe paddling, quilt making, painting, pāʻū riding, and most of all, spending time with her family.


She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Edward Chung Cashman; sons Edward Jr. (Pikake), Kimo (Tammy Ann); daughter Mahealani “Sis” Finau (Toni); grandchildren Pilialohamauloa, Uluwehiokapulapulaikalāʻakea, Kekiaʻiokanoenoeuakeaohāna, Hiʻilei, Mahealani Sii; great-grandson, Kumakakawaiwehiikealoha; sisters Julei Kaʻiwi and Miriam “Lou” Perreira; brother Lyons K. Naone III; uncle Edgar (Lynn) Okada; Aunty Angela (Shogo) Kai.


Viola will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, Tūtū, daughter, and sister; a highly-respected kumu; and a kupuna who always had a deep sense of aloha for the ʻāina and people of Hāna.


Services for Viola Leialoha Naone Cashman will be held on Oʻahu on April 11, 2023 at the Ballard Family Moanalua Mortuary (1150 Kikowaena Street, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi 96819). Visitation at 10 am, Services at 11 am and burial at 2 pm at the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park (47-200 Kahekili Hwy, Kaneohe, Hi 96744). A memorial lunch will be held for Viola on Maui on April 22, 2023 at 12 noon at the Akule Hale - Hāna, Maui.
