Glen Ethel Stright Obituary

It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Clayton Park, Halifax on March 27, 2023, at the age of 95.

Born in Mt. Pleasant, PEI, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Carrie McKinnon (nee Williams). She was the last living sibling of a family of 15 children. Glen was raised on a working farm and felt that was the main reason for her longevity. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Ivan Stright in 1998 and her granddaughter, Kellie Whitney (O’Farrell) in 2021.

At the young age of 16, she left PEI to work in the civil service in Ottawa, a pretty significant adventure for a young farm girl back in those days! Shortly after the war ended (1946) she returned to PEI and began working at a jewelry store in Summerside, where she met Ivan who was working next door at the Royal Bank. The two soon married and shortly after moved to Pictou, NS where Ivan joined his father and brother establishing the boat building business “Stright MacKay”. There they raised five children who were all part of the team to look after our large garden in the backyard!

Following their life in Pictou they moved around Nova Scotia a fair amount as Ivan worked for several building supply companies which had them taking up residences in Lower Sackville, New Glasgow, Kentville and Churchville (had a bountiful garden in all these locations) prior to moving to Halifax and retiring in 1995.

Throughout her life Glen was always a busy, hard-working lady whether it was working as a Personal Care Worker, looking after the garden, sewing dresses for her children’s weddings/proms, or making things for her children and grandchildren. A very talented seamstress, cook/baker, and wife/mother/grandmother and ”Nanny” who loved all those around her.

In addition to these attributes one of her most precious gifts to those in her presence was her memorable and infectious laugh and radiating smile. It spread across her face to her sparkling eyes lighting up the room and making it a better place for all by her just being there.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Living proof that “Good things come in small packages”.

Glen is survived by her children, Rod (Linda), Cynthia (Clint), Halifax; Karen, California; Shelly (Steve) Ontario, and Les (Jennifer) Halifax; eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.

A huge thank you to the nurses and staff at Parkstone Enhanced Care, for their care, dedication, compassion and professionalism in looking after Mom in her final days.

Donations in Glen’s memory may be made to Bethany United Church, Halifax.

Cremation has taken place and as per her wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service.

A celebration of her life and burial will take place at a future date.
