Norman Neste Oceanside Obituary

Norman Neste

Norman Arnold Neste, 92, passed away on April 15, 2016 from complications resulting from Alzheimer's disease. Norman was born on August 24, 1923 in Hemet, California to Nora and Arnold Neste. He graduated high school in 1941 and then toured the country with his childhood friend in his Model A Ford. Like most young men of the Greatest Generation, he volunteered for military service by enlisting in the Army. After the War, Norman, a decorated World War II veteran, returned to California and earned an engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He married Virginia Russell in 1948 and started his career as assistant city engineer in Barstow, CA. In 1958, Norman decided to go into private practice and opened the firm of Norman A. Neste, Consulting Engineers. During the next decade, he took on two partners and the firm became known as Neste, Brudin, and Stone, Inc., eventually growing to over two hundred employees. The firm merged with Lowery & Associates in 1986 and was later known as NBS/Lowery, Inc. In 1978, the Nestes moved to Rancho Bernardo where the corporate headquarters had relocated. Norman served as president of both the California Council of Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors and the Consulting Engineers Association of California. The Nestes made Rancho Bernardo their home for twenty-five years and extended their stay when they moved to Casa de Las Campanas, where Virginia still resides. Norman took an active role in civic organizations, including serving on the board of directors of the Palomar-Pomerado Hospital District, a two-year term as president of the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, and a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Rancho Bernardo. Norman loved to sail, golf, ski, and travel the world. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a mentor and true friend to many. All will sorely miss Norman, but as a man who loved the Lord, he is now resting peacefully with his Maker. Norman leaves behind his wife of sixty-eight years, Virginia, their three children and their spouses: David and Lorie Neste, Eric and Diane Neste, and Anne and Jim Allen, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 on May 21st in the Dinner Theater at Casa de Las Campanas, 18755 West Bernardo Drive, San Diego. A private interment will be held at Miramar National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations made in Norman's name to the Thousand Pines Christian Camp and Conference Center, P. O. Box 3288, Crestline, CA 92325 or www.thousandpines.com
