Emmanuel James Mombourquette Obituary

Mombourquette, Emmanuel James “Mannie” Lower L’Ardoise, Richmond Co. Age 82 died peacefully at home on Monday, March 27, 2023 after a courageous 5-year battle with cancer. Born January 31, 1941 in Lower L’Ardoise. He was the youngest child of Manuel and Sarah (McGrath) Mombourquette.

As a man of great faith, Mannie believed in strong family ties. Mannie enjoyed life to the fullest with his wife, Marie (Clannon) of 56 years by his side. He will be missed by his children, Gregory (Deborah) St. Peters; Carolyn (Albert) Lower L’Ardoise; Gerard (Patricia) Point Michaud; grandson, Andrew (Kelsey) MacCuish, Lloydminster, Alberta. Also left to mourn are his siblings, Gladys Gracie, Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s; Thomas (Kay) Mombourquette, Sally Anne Mombourquette and Rita Mae Sampson, all of Lower L’Ardoise; several nieces and nephews and his close lifelong friend, John Mombourquette.

Mannie was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Sarah; his in-laws, Thomas and Matilda Clannon; sisters, Mary Pastorius, Mildred Briand, Catherine Mombourquette, Theresa McNeil, Margaret LaBelle; brother, James Emmanuel in infancy; brother-in-law, Harry A. Sampson and partners in crime Robert “Bobby” McGrath, and Gerry McNeil.

Mannie was a teller of tales. He often told stories of his early days. Wherever Mannie was, there was laughter. Throughout his illness, his strong faith kept him positive, and he never once complained.

Mannie wore many hats during his life. As a young man, he started out fishing with his uncle, driving a pulp truck for Leonard Martell and working on several construction projects as a Teamster before returning to fishing in 1980. He fished out of Little Harbour until he retired at the age of 70.

Mannie was a life long active supporter of the Federal and Provincial Liberal Parties. He made many lifelong friends that became like family over the years. He was also an avid Blue Jays fan and was fortunate to see many games in person.

The family would like to acknowledge and express gratitude to: Gladys for her kind and compassionate care that allowed us to keep him home until the end. Dr’s. Sampson, Miller, Rent and Seleba and the wonderful team at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Dr. Cooper, his nurses and the Richmond County Continuing Care team of nurses for their unwavering dedication and support. Our amazing neighbours for their kindness and help during Mannie’s cancer journey.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 30 from 2-9 p.m. in Holy Guardian Angels Funeral Parlor, L’Ardoise. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, March 31 in Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, L'Ardoise with Father John Yake officiating. Burial in Holy Guardian Angels Church Cemetery at a later date.
