Evelyn (Moen) (Van Dreel) Kuehl silently said goodbye and peacefully passed away on March 23, 2023.

Evelyn was born in Auburndale WI on October 11, 1937, to the late Thurston and Lilah (Larson) Moen. She attended school in Spencer, and graduated from Spencer High School in 1956. She continued her education at the Wisconsin Teacher’s College in Wisconsin Rapids, UWSP, and received her Master’s at UW-Madison. She began her teaching career in 1959 in Pulaski and then went on to teach in Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools. She was a teacher in the Stevens Point Catholic School system from 1966 thru 1981. In 1987 she went to work for Associated Bank in Stevens Point, retiring from there May 1, 2009.

Evelyn married Donavon Van Dreel in 1958. They had 6 children; Kari (Paul) Stroik of Whiting, Peggy (Billy) Schleizer of Almond, Sarah (Brian) Brillowski of Whiting, Jeff (Pam) Van Dreel of Kellner, Marcia (Larry) Sheveland of Oconomowoc and Von Van Dreel of Wind Lake. Their marriage ended in 1981. Evelyn married Bobby Kuehl in 1985 and gained 3 stepchildren; John (Dodi) Kuehl of McFarland, Jim (Kim) Kuehl of Madison and Cherise (Mark) Henry of Cottage Grove.

Evelyn was raised on a farm in Spencer. Listening to her stories it would appear she and her 9 brothers/sisters worked hard but always found time for some shenanigans. This held true even after they all grew up and married. Family was so important to Evelyn and she made sure we would grow up knowing our relatives. After her marriage to Donavon, she moved to the Wisconsin Rapids (Kellner) area, started a family and continued her teaching career. While driving between Rapids and Plover for work every day, she spotted a little hobby farm and decided it would be a great place to continue raising the children. She made it the best little hobby farm and experience a child could want growing up. She made sure we knew the value of hard work but always made sure we had time for fun. The memories created will get us through the tough days ahead without her. Her gardens were beautiful and her home was filled with love. After her 1st marriage ended, she married Bobby Kuehl. They resided in Plover. In their later years they had a permanent campsite where they could go to socialize and enjoy the outdoors. No matter the temperature you would always find a campfire going if Evelyn was there, and even at camp her beautiful flower beds stood out and the birds never went hungry. She enjoyed country music, notably Johnny Cash. Evelyn loved to bake and the tradition of Christmas baking started early and ended with enough to feed three counties. Keeping with her Scandinavian heritage, she made rosettes and lefsa every Christmas.

Evelyn’s father’s birth home in Norway was selected for the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum’s Open Air Division. It was dismantled in Norway and shipped to Decorah, IA in 1974, with the generous assistance of Al Johnson of Sister Bay, WI. Once it was re-assembled, it was dedicated as the Valdres House, named after the region in Norway where it was constructed.

Evelyn is survived by all of her children and stepchildren; her sister, Kathy Vruwink; and grandchildren, Nichole (Lee) Nelson, Nicholas (Amelia) Stroik, Kimberly (Jason) Hutkowski, Katie Kulas, Josh Van Dreel, Jordan (Caitlin) Brillowski, Tyler (Kelly) Sheveland, Emily Sheveland, Kyle (KC VandeMerkt) Van Dreel, Tanya Van Dreel, Jenna Van Dreel, Carisa Anderson, Holly Chialda, Alex Dampier, Lindsay Lamb and Melissa (Matthew) Wiswell. She was also blessed with great grandchildren Hannah, Braeden and Sophia Nelson, Gavin Stroik, Alex, Charlie, Cole and Clinton Hutkowski, Emmett Brillowski, Emma Roider, Margo Sheveland, Drake and Sawyer Lamb, and Maeve and Meyer Wiswell. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husbands; eight brothers and sisters, Adolph Singstock, Virgil Moen, Sanford Moen, Gordie Moen, Arlan Moen, Thurston Moen, Jeanette Weber, and Pearl Eckes; grandsons, Matt and Paul Schleizer; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

We were blessed to experience mom’s love for us and honored to love her back. Whether you are a relative, a friend or a co-worker, when you think of Evelyn, celebrate the good memories you have of her. She will be missed more than any words could express, but she will be forever in our hearts.

The family would like to thank Dimensions Living (formerly Brookdale) in Stevens Point for providing a wonderful place for mom to live out the last years of her life. To the staff there, we hope you smile when you think of the times you shared with her, when you hear Johnny Cash, remember your “June” and when you order that Old Fashioned, raise your glass to her. We also want to thank St. Croix Hospice for their comfort care.

A service to honor Evelyn’s memory will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Shuda Funeral Home - 2400 Plover Road, Plover. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories at the funeral home that day from 9:30 AM until the time of service.
