La Jara resident Susan “Sue Sue” Velasquez, 90, died March 21, 2023 at her home in La Jara, Colorado surrounded by three generations of her loving family.

Susan was born at home in Espinosa, near Antonito, Colorado on July 30, 1932, the daughter of Juan B Lobato and Neomi Garcia. She married the love of her life, Fred L. Velasquez, Sr. on April 25, 1954 in Conejos, Colorado.

Susan worked with her husband, Fred, for more than 32 years as an Office Manager for Farm Bureau Insurance and later Mountain Valley Insurance. Throughout those 32 years she welcomed friends and family around her counter with a pot of coffee. She enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, and ceramics. She had a beautiful house full of plants she loved.

Susan is survived by her husband Fred Velasquez, Sr. of La Jara, CO; her children Deborah (Dan) Marquez of La Jara, Dorrie Quintana of La Jara, Fred Velasquez, Jr. of La Jara, Wendyl (Rick) Olson of St. Paul, MN, and Regan (Laura) Velasquez of Antonito, CO; her sister Aaronella (Eppie) Perea of Arvada, CO; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild on the way; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, her son Nicholas F. Velasquez, her grandchildren Lisa Betancourt, Cooper Olson and Fred Velasquez, III (Mr. V); her siblings John B. Lobato, Jr., Ignacio Lobato, Naomi Garcia, Margaret DeHerrera, Anastacio Lobato, Adolph Lobato, Elizabeth Romero, and Paul Lobato.

Cremation was chosen and a Recitation of the Rosary will be held 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2023 followed by a Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, both at the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Jara. Interment will take place in the La Jara Cemetery at a later time.
