Lyle E. Steffen Obituary

Lyle Erving Steffen, age 84, of Marshfield, passed away with his family at his side on March 19, 2023.

Lyle Erving Steffen was born on May 10, 1938, to Olive Josephine (Morrison) and Erving Joseph Steffen, in Lindsey, Wood County, Wisconsin. He attended Long School Elementary in the Richfield Township, then Willard D. Purdy Junior High School and Marshfield Senior High School, where he graduated in 1956. After graduation Lyle joined the Army National Guard in Marshfield’s Battery B, 32nd “Red Arrow” Infantry Division. He served from 1956 to 1963, and was activated October 1961-August 1962 to Fort Lewis, Washington in response to the Berlin Crisis.

In October 1963 he met Kathryn Margaret Weber at a local wedding dance, and they married 2 years later on October 9, 1965, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bakerville, Wisconsin. The couple started their life together on a farmstead in the Richfield Township and continued the dairy tradition until April 2008, officially retiring from milking on his 70th birthday. In the preceding years he planted and harvested his cropland, then rented his land for crop production.

Since his retirement Lyle enjoyed summer fishing at his campers in Sturgeon Bay and Lake Holcome; caring for his wild turkeys, deer, and other creatures; joining high school friends for breakfast; playing weekly sheepshead and smear; improving his woodland for deer hunting; creating jewelry boxes and mementos from wood harvested on his land, and “checking the crops” (casino trips) with his friends. During his post farming years, Lyle and Kathy enjoyed traveling to see their adult children and thoroughly enjoyed their 13 grandchildren, especially seeing them experience, explore, and enjoy their farmstead.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn and their five children and grandchildren: Barbara Steffen & Henrique Botelho, Kelsey and Alexandro of Wetumpka, AL; Michael Steffen & Carrie Kallstrom, Garrett, Connor, and Evan of Eau Claire, WI; Patrick Steffen & Kristen Intress, Dylan, Lindsey and Conner of Castilian Springs, TN; Ann Sommer, Austin and Abegail of Marshfield, WI; and Cheryl & Don Olson, Addison, Drew and Alexa of Glendale, AZ. He is also survived by his brother Donald (Alice) and extended family and friends. He is preceded by his parents, and his mother and father-in-law Ann and Eugene Weber.
