Kenneth Pramuk Obituary

Kenneth Pramuk, an extraordinary, beloved man, died on March 18, 2023, after a long, hard-fought battle against congestive heart failure and osteoarthritis.

Ken was born on December 2, 1942, and lived his entire life in the Akron area. He was a 1961 graduate of Buchtel High School and earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Akron where he also taught for many years. A passionate teacher of composition, Ken co-authored the textbook used by the University to teach Basic Writers.

Ken also worked as the personnel director at FallsView Psychiatric Hospital, and operated Nickelby’s tavern in Wallhaven which he considered one of his proudest achievements. There he made many friends and had many loyal customers and employees.

Ken was able to enjoy many travel adventures. He studied Tai Chi in China, took a boat down the Amazon, hiked the Inca Trail and went on Safari in Africa. As a youth, he hitchhiked around Europe for several months with only a backpack.

Ken was also a gifted artist and writer who lived his life the way he wished. He was a kind and gentle man with a great intellect and a marvelous sense of humor. He was truly one of a kind.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Rhea and Joseph Pramuk. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Christine and Jennifer of Seattle, WA, cousin, Edward Pramuk (Mary) of Baton Rouge, LA, half sisters, JoAnn Schilling (Ralph) and Mary Crookshank(Scott) of Seattle, WA, and by long-time love and partner, Eloise Wheeler.

Cremation has taken place. To honor Ken’s wishes there will be no services. If desired, memorials may be made to The Haven of Rest or The Nature Conservancy.
