<p>Mrs. Tonya Felicia Cherry James, daughter of Patricia Smith and the late James Lee Cherry, entered into eternal rest suddenly on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at home. &nbsp;She was born on June 17, 1975, in Richmond, Virginia. </p><p>At an early age, she joined in fellowship with Zion Baptist Church - Lightfoot under the leadership of Rev. Carlton B. Johnson. She remained an active member until her passing. </p><p>Tonya was educated in the Williamsburg-James City County public school system graduating from Lafayette High School Class of 1993. She furthered her education at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College and The School of Dentistry at VCU, graduating with a degree in Dental Hygiene. </p><p>Tonya has been employed with Curry Dental Center of Williamsburg, VA, since October 2019, under the leadership of Dr. Lisa Curry, where she continued to grow and advance in her career. </p><p>Tonya was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd James; father, James Cherry; and grandmother, Victoria P. Goode. </p><p>She leaves to cherish fond memories her three daughters, Shakira King, Donesha Meekins, and Indiyah Jones; granddaughter, Makayla King, who affectionately called her Mi Mi; parents, Patricia and Horace Smith; special friend, Troy; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends. </p><p>A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 23, 2023, in Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Valerie Matthews officiating. &nbsp;Live stream will be available at the beginning of the service. &nbsp;Interment to follow in the church cemetery. &nbsp;Mrs. James may be viewed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. &nbsp;Facial coverings are required for all services. </p><p>The family requests that memorial contributions be made at&nbsp;https://www.gofundme.com/f/tonya-james. &nbsp;Any amount, big or small, is appreciated. </p><p>Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. 757-229-3011 whitingsfuneralhome.com </p>

Ms. Tonya was a such a strong person who loved her family. I met her at a very hard time in her life but admired her strength . I was very lucky to have met her as were others she met.
