Joan Shelton, 94, of Calamus, Iowa, passed away Friday, March 17,2023, at Wheatland Manor Nursing Home.

Joan was born January 8, 1929, the daughter of Norwin “Pat” and Vanda (Hamdorf) Porth.  She graduated from Calamus Community School.  Upon graduation she was employed by Farm Bureau, DeWitt, Iowa, until 1947, when Joan and Oscar were married.  They farmed South of Calamus until retirement.  Later in life Joan was employed by Wheatland Manor Nursing Home for ten years as a nurse aide.  Joan was a 4th grade Sunday School teacher for many years. She was involved with church activities and committees at Faith Lutheran church, Calamus, where she and Oscar were members. Joan was a 50-year member of a local 500 card club and played in a ladies bridge club for years.  Joan was a member of the Wapsi Oaks Country Club, golfing both there and in Ft. Myers, Florida, where she and Oscar spent their winters.  Joan was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs, and U of I, watching many games of baseball, basketball, and football on television (she was known to holler if they were playing poorly)! 

Surviving are her daughters, Pat Shelton of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Tammi Anderson of West Des Moines; her son, Hal (Andrea) Shelton of rural Calamus; her grandchildren, Ross (Cara) Anderson of Ankeny, Joshua (Kristi) Jacobs of Bettendorf and Luke (Jessica) Shelton of Calamus; her great-grandchildren, Oscar Anderson, Audrey, Violet and Evelyn Jacobs and Brent and Caleb Shelton; her sisters-in-law, Rusty Porth and Elaine Shelton.

Preceding Joan in death were her husband, grandsons, Matthew Jacobs and Kent Anderson; her brother, Merle Porth and brother-in-law, Dr. Marlon Shelton.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 24, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, with Visitation from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the church. Burial will follow at Kvindherred Cemetery in rural Calamus. Pallbearers will be Ross, Cara and Oscar Anderson; Joshua, Kristi and Audrey Jacobs; and Luke and Jessica Shelton.
