Dorothy S. Fischer Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Sue Fischer, age 90, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Friday, March 17, 2023, at Jefferson City Manor.

Dorothy was born on March 7, 1933, in Beaumont, Tx. a daughter of W.H.B. “Bill” and Mary Ella (Lowrey) Fehl.

She graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont and attended St. John’s Lutheran College in Winfield, Ks. She would later earn her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Lincoln University.

She moved to Jefferson City in 1952 and met the love of her life, Ralph Fischer, while she was a Sunday school teacher and he was superintendent at Trinity Lutheran Church. They were married on January 2, 1954, and were blessed with a wonderful marriage until he preceded her in death on January 5, 1992.

Dorothy was an elementary school teacher for 35 years at Trinity Lutheran School until her retirement in 1996. She taught many children through the years and showed all the children love, respect and compassion. For her efforts as a teacher, she was honored to be voted “Person of the Year” in 2017 by the Trinity Lutheran Alumni Association. Before her children started school, she was self-employed as a seamstress for ten years so she could be at home with them.

Dorothy was a longtime and faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. The church was the focal part of her life because of all the time she spent at school and church. She taught Sunday school classes, served with the LWML group, and was a Stephen Minister. She helped make braille books for the blind and made numerous meals for activities at the church. Her faith guided her life, and with her being an avid reader, she started each day with a daily devotion.

She served as a Docent at the Governor’s Mansion for three years. Dorothy was also active with the Heisinger Auxiliary and served as president of the organization for two terms. She had a group of friends that she loved meeting for a weekly lunch.

Survivors include: two daughters, Mariel Hale (Ernest) of Belle, Mo. and Shari Fischer of Jefferson City, Mo.; two grandchildren, Clint Hale (Stephanie) and Cassie Galbreath (Jordan); one great-grandson, Isaiah Galbreath; sister-in-law, Vi Fehl; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Ralph; granddaughter, Ashley Branson; siblings, Miriam DeMerritt and her husband John, the Reverend W.H.B. “Bud” Fehl, Jr. and his first wife Nita, the Reverend George Fehl and his wife Josephine, and Loyce Wukasch and her husband Bobby; and brother-in-law, Robert Fischer and his wife LeAnn.

Her family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at The Arbors, Jefferson City Manor and Capital Region Medical Center for all the love and compassion they showed Dorothy while she was in their care.

Visitation will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverend Samuel Powell and the Reverend Jesse Schlie officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Calvary High School or Trinity Lutheran Church or School.
