Marie J. Mitteer

Middletown, New York

Marie J. Mitteer, a lifelong resident of Middletown, died after a long and enduring life, with her family at her bedside on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2023 at Garnet Medical Center. She was 99 years old.

She was born one of six children to Frank and Nunziatta DeCerbo Lombardo in Newburgh, New York on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1924. When her Mom was killed in an automobile accident, the children were sent to an orphanage to be raised. The absence of a mom meant Marie would become independent, determined and self-reliant.

She married Richard G. Mitteer, a WWII Army veteran and together they raised two daughters. He died on March 22, 1987 in Middletown.

A lover of country music, John Wayne movies and WWE Wrestling, she was feisty and spirited. Her passion was feeding people and seeing her grandchildren. She made great meatballs!

Marie is survived by her daughters, Rosemarie (Daniel) Hulseapple and Kathy Ann (Patrick) Clark, her sister Kathrine Johnson and her cherished grands; Paul(Pam), Scott (Cheryl), Lynn-Ann (Bob), Kristen (Aaron) and Wendy as well as 12 greats; Daniel, Andrea, Kaitlynn (David), Zachary, Jessa, Makayla, Bailey, Robert, Samuel, Meagan, Paige, Jacob and 1 great-great-grand; Addalynn.

Visitation will be held at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with a Funeral Service of Remembrance at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Wallkill Cemetery in the family plot.

Donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
