Dr. Carroll Dewitt Russell, 89, of Hattiesburg passed away on March 16, 2023 at Bedford Care Monroe Hall. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg from 12:30 P.M. until service at 1:30 P.M. followed by burial in Highland Cemetery.

Dr. Russell was born in Stratton, MS. on March 24, 1933. He graduated from the Stratton School District and from East Central Junior College in Decatur, MS, where he received a Liberal Arts Associate Degree. He then went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in June of 1955. After graduating from Southern Miss, Dr. Russell served two years of active duty in the United States Air Force. In June of 1963, he received his Master of Education Degree from Southern Miss, and then the Specialist Degree in Elementary Education in 1972, and completed his Doctorate in 1975 from Southern Miss. His work experience includes three years as a teacher and yearbook advisor at Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, TX from 1957 to 1960; a Reading and Science Teacher, and Counselor in the Hattiesburg Public Schools from 1960 to 1963. He also served as an Elementary Principal in the Hattiesburg Public Schools, including at W.I. Thames Elementary School.

He was preceded in death by his wife Pattie T Russell; son, Don Russell; and parents Dewitt and Wydell Russell.

He is survived by one son, Lee Davis Russell.
