John B. Burke

<p>John B. Burke, 95, of the Poquonock section of Windsor, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Meadowbrook of Granby. Born in Hartford on March 27, 1927, the son of the late John A. and Martha (Brozat) Burke. John was raised in Poquonock and was a 1945 graduate of John Fitch High School. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country as an MP in WWII.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>John was employed for many years as an electronics assembler at Hamilton Standard. Following his retirement at age 55, he went on to a second part time career as a Car Salesman for National Car Rental Systems, Inc. in Windsor Locks. He was also a longtime communicant of St. Joseph Church in Poquonock. John had numerous hobbies and interest over the years. He enjoyed gardening, making his special jared “Dill Pickles,” growing tomatoes, and occasionally dabbled with home made wine. John really enjoy going out to breakfast on his birthday with nieces Laurie and Debbie. Laurie spent the most time caring for John in his final years! In the wintertime, he would go north snowmobiling with a special friend. In the summer one of his favorite passions was driving his 1930 Model A around town. He liked blowing the horn when he drove past his nephew’s house on River Street. He liked watching the Boston Red Sox and many other sporting events. He loved boating and water skiing in his younger days with his late brother Daniel. John enjoyed family time too with his sister Anne Lemini, and her late husband Paul, and her children during the holidays. Uncle John was quite the jokester! He spent much of his time, with his late sister Helen who he loved teasing about enjoying her tea, soup, and salad. They spent nearly 35 years together living in the family home, after their mother had passed.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>John is survived by his sister, Anna T. Lemini of Windsor Locks, his beloved nieces and nephews, Deborah L. Burke and her companion Paul Tolisano of Windsor, Kevin E. Burke and his wife Beth of Windsor, Laurie S. Girouard and her husband Arthur of West Suffield, James W. Burke of Poquonock, Michael P. Burke of Salem, and his wife Tina, Linda Mercier of East Windsor, Jeanne Owen of East Windsor, Doreen Lemini of Windsor Locks, David Lemini of Windsor Locks, and his wife Christine, and many great nieces and great nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Helen P. Burke and his brother, Daniel J. Burke.&nbsp;</p><p><br></p><p>Calling hours will be held on Friday March 24, 2023, from 4-7PM at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave, Windsor, CT 06095. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday March 25, 2023, at 10AM at Carmon’s. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, 2085 Poquonock Ave, Windsor, CT 06095. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s Memory may be made to the American School for the Deaf, 139 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT, 06107.
