<p>Obituary </p><p>Mary Boone Oxley </p><p>nee Mary Boone Wheeler </p><p><br></p><p>Mary Boone Oxley, 94, of College Station, Texas passed away on March 14, 2023 in Austin, Texas. She was born in Brownwood, Texas and grew up in Corsicana, Fort Worth and El Paso. Her passion and professional vocation was the education of young children.</p><p><br></p><p>Her memorial service and inurnment will take place on March 28 at 1 pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 906 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas. A reception will follow in the parish hall at St. Thomas. </p><p><br></p><p>Mary graduated from Texas Women's University in 1949 and began teaching elementary school in El Paso. In 1950 she married William Robert Oxley and they moved to Northern California where Mary taught elementary school and began raising their first child, Paul William Oxley. </p><p><br></p><p>Mary delighted in her summers spent in the little town of Sewanee, Tennessee, while Bill attended seminary there at the University of the South. She loved the community, camaraderie of the communal meals, and picking blueberries. </p><p><br></p><p>After her husband's ordination into the Episcopal clergy the young family moved to Austin, Texas in 1954. While there, she had her second child, Claire Knox Oxley. In 1958 the family moved to College Station, Texas, where Mary was a Cub Scout troop leader, and later a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader and was active in children's programs at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, teaching confirmation classes, Vacation Bible School, and co-directing sessions at church camp. </p><p><br></p><p>In 1967 Mary earned her Masters degree in Education and Psychology from Texas A&amp;M and began her long career as a kindergarten teacher at St. Thomas Early Learning Center. In 1985 Mary became a lecturer in the Education Department of Texas A&amp;M where she taught until 1996. During that time she was honored with the Outstanding Teaching Award and a Distinguished Teaching Award. </p><p><br></p><p>Mary was an avid bird watcher and bridge player, a consummate hostess, and loved to travel. She visited Europe, Africa and the Middle East, first with her husband and after his death, her daughter and granddaughter, passing on her love of travel to them.</p><p>Her passion for teaching and children lives on in all those who she taught and the many Godchildren she loved along the way. She had a kind word for everyone she met and her caring and compassionate spirit will be missed. </p><p>While she is rejoicing in heaven, remember that every day is a good day to use the nice dishes. </p><p><br></p><p>Mary was preceded in death by her husband, The Reverend William Robert Oxley and her son, Paul William Oxley. She is survived by her daughter Claire Oxley, daughter-in-law Cathy DeLotto Oxley, granddaughter Kimberly Marson and grandson-in-law Jason Marson.</p>
