Sonja Gisell Simmons Obituary

Funeral services for Sonja Gisell Howard Simmons of Dublin, Georgia, will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at 11 AM at the Williams Chapel Baptist Church, 1142 Georgia Hwy 29 in East Dublin, Georgia. Minister Reggie Howard will deliver the eulogy.Interment will follow in the Dudley Memorial Cemetery.

Sonja Howard entered this life on Wednesday, March 8, 1967, to Barbara Howard-James and the late Benjamin Lowther of Dublin, Georgia. Sonja was educated in the Laurens County School System where she graduated from West Laurens High School. She pursued her quest for knowledge by matriculating in Oconee Fall Line Technical College where she studied Computer Information Center Systems and Administrative Assistance.

Sonja was well known and well-loved in her community. She never met a stranger, and a stranger never forgot her. Her passions were many, but she doted on her special “Ride or Die” ZaKoi Battle who was near and dear to her heart, she loved traveling softball and was at her best when she was loving on her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Sonja passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023. She was preceded in death by her fathers, Benjamin Lowther and J. Jack James, her sister, Sharon Butler “BooBoo”, and her niece, Eboni Simpson.

Sonja leaves to mourn her husband of 35 years, Michael Simmons, Sr., her daughter, Sig’Courtney Howard, her son, Michael Simmons, Jr., (Laknuvia), her mother, Barbara Howard-James, all of Dublin, Georgia, her mother-in-law, Eliza Davis of East Dublin, Georgia; four brothers, William “Billy” Howard of Eastman, Georgia, Anthony Howard of Perry, Georgia, Barron (Constance) Howard and Reginald (Tamela) Howard of Dublin, Georgia; three sisters, Kristina (Terrance) James, Nicole Benjamin, and Barbara Ryals, her grandchildren, De’Shawn Denson, Za’Koi Battle, Sunjai Simmons and Kynslee Simmons, all of Dublin, Georgia, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sonja was a very special person in that she had many people that were also very special to her; all her nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and it would be a mistake to name some and not name others. At this time, please know that “she loved you more” than you will ever know, and your love and support will never go unnoticed.
