Then while teaching at a business college in Sioux Falls, SD, she caught the eye of a handsome paint store manager named Roger Carlson. Obituary

Alice Ann Carlson

Age 89

Of White Bear Lake

Our beloved Mom passed away on March 15, 2023 and is in the presence of Jesus face to face.  Preceded in death by her husband Roger, her parents Harry and Louise Peterson and baby brother Lawrie Peterson.  Survived by precious children Amy (Richard) Doherty, Lori (Jeffrey) Summers, Peter (Katherine) and James (Casandra); 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.  We honor Alice’s life full of great faith, fervent prayer, amazing creativity, wonderful generosity and unconditional love. Funeral service, Friday, March 24, 2023 at 11:00 AM at AMAZING GRACE ASSEMBLY OF GOD CHURCH, 1237 Earl Street, St. Paul with visitation one hour before the service.  Interment Union Cemetery, Maplewood.

The foundations of Alice’s life began in a farm home on the prairies of South Dakota. They were strengthened by the influence of hard working, loving and godly parents as she grew into a beautiful young woman. After high school graduation, she began learning secretary and accounting skills, also mastering the use of the stenograph. His smile was contagious, and their sweet courtship resulted in marriage the summer of 1958. Within a few years, they were so happy to welcome their first baby girl, Amy, soon followed by another baby girl, Lori.  Shortly after moving to St. Paul, where Roger’s family was from, along came baby brother Peter, and the girls were so thrilled! Soon afterwards the family settled down in White Bear Lake, MN, where another surprise joy came several years later: baby brother Jamie was born! Alice loved being a devoted wife and Mom, and because of Roger’s diligent work ethic, she was able to stay home with their four children, thriving as a homemaker. It is now the season of Lent . . . of letting go for a greater purpose . . . something our dear mother taught us and lived and breathed before us.  She grasped the wonderful message of redemption through the Father’s plan to send His Son to each of us, and she influenced many over her lifetime to embrace this truth.  As Mom grew older, she grew increasingly more content with less . . . that is, less ease of movement while accepting daily pain (yet never, ever complaining) less financial reserve (yet always finding creative ways to give, for this was her love language); less independence  (yet ever grateful to remain in her own home and always so thankful for transportation from family); less fearful of our increasingly changing world (yet continuing in steadfast prayer for God’s intervention and His renewal).  When we kids were little, one of our gifts every Christmas was something called a “Mama Box.”  This would consist of an individual handmade outfit, along with a handmade stuffed toy.  I am seeing now that her last Mama Box gift that we are opening is that of teaching us to die well, to have no unfinished business.  Eccl. 7:2 reminds us, “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart.”  We, as her family and friends are learning the riches of lingering in this “house of mourning” during this season of Lent.  We are finding God’s comfort to be true when we allow Him to isolate and purify what is most valuable . . . loving God and loving people. Alice, Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, dear Friend, kind Stranger to all, in the most ordinary of ways you did this so well!  We will see you in the morning, at the ultimate Resurrection Day!
