It makes me work harder to prove them wrong.” As a teenager and young adult, he would keep notebooks with statistical data about his favorite sports player and team. When Derrick was asked why he was keeping several notebooks with stats about players and teams, he would remark, “I am practicing for my dream job as a statistician for the Yankees.” Although Derrick did not obtain his dream job, he remained a devoted sports fan until the end and kept the stats in his head as talking points during discussions or debates with his older brother and opposing team fans.

Derrick developed an aptitude for computer technology and was able to secure a position with the New York City Board of Education as a computer technologist. Obituary

Derrick Pasley, 58, of The Bronx, passed away Tuesday, March 7 after battling a rare disease along with several health complications. Derrick was born November 11, 1964, in Long Island City, NY to Lawrence Pasley Sr. and Bessie Joyce (McHerrin) Pasley. At an early age, it was clear to everyone who watched him grow up that he was extremely gifted and a natural problem solver. Those remarkable characteristics afforded him the opportunity to skip a grade in elementary school and be placed in a special class for advanced students.

He followed in his father's footsteps by also attending Aviation High School in Queens, New York. After high school, he studied at the Borough of Manhattan Community College and Hunter College in New York City, and later in life, to enhance his career objectives, returned to college to obtain an associate degree. During this time, Derrick also worked at the New York Public Library, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), and the New York City Board of Education as a computer service technician/associate prior to his untimely passing.

Derrick had many talents, skills, and hobbies. He was blessed with the ability to calculate numbers and math equations in his head. Family and friends would often assign Derrick the role of calculating the restaurant bill, determining how much each person would contribute to the bill, and the tip. He was faster than a calculator. Derrick loved road trips with the family.

Unlike most children that would sit in the back seat and wait until the destination was reached, Derrick would sit in the front seat with his father and watch him use a paper road map to strategically select the best travel route. As Derrick got older, it was obvious to most that he had the ability to recall information about spatial environments and because of this, he was known as the “map man” or “original GPS.” Derrick could easily provide you with the quickest and best route with or without using a paper road map. With Derrick’s assistance, you never had to re-calculate your route if you missed an exit. Derrick also had a side job as a volunteer proofreader. Family and friends would ask him to proofread documents, reports, and research papers since he had a talent for writing and strong creative thinking skills. Derrick read, collected, and traded DC comics, but his passion was sports. He was a sports enthusiast and posted numerous photos of Yankee stadium and his favorite sports teams. His favorite teams were the Yankees, Raiders, NY Islanders, Knicks, Syracuse, and Notre Dame. Derrick had two favorite Yankee players: Reggie Jackson and Dereck Jeter.

He was a dedicated, flexible, confident, honest, and detail-oriented employee. He enjoyed problem-solving and troubleshooting technical issues to meet the mission and vision of the department. Derrick was known to arrive early to work and leave late to ensure large-scale projects including routine tasks were completed timely. Derrick was a well-liked employee who will be missed for being an early bird, but most of all, someone who can be relied upon to get the job done.

He also shared his knowledge with others outside of his work community and would install programs, defrag, and troubleshoot personal computers for friends and family.

Some would say that Derrick wore his heart on his sleeve because if he loved you and had respect for you, you knew it! He would do almost anything for those special individuals that he considered part of his extended family. Derrick was very much like his father in that he believed it was his duty to protect and be fully present with his family. He displayed this by never missing a family birthday celebration or major holiday gathering. He would always give two funny birthday cards and the third birthday card would be sentimental with a gift. For the family, birthdays will not be the same.

Derrick was preceded in death by his beloved father, Lawrence Pasley Sr. Derrick is survived by his mother, Bessie J. Pasley, siblings Lawrence Pasley Jr. and Petra C.
