Dexter Arthur Power Obituary

It is with broken hearts that we announce that Dexter Arthur Power, 75 yrs old of Lake Echo, went to be with the Lord on Mar 15, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dexter was born on Sep 20, 1947 in Yarmouth, NS, the son of the late Mary and Kendall Power. Dexter will always be cherished and never forgotten by his loving wife Cathy of nearly 50 years, his mother-in-law Pearl Prime whom he helped Cathy care for, his daughters Melanie Coombs (Tim) of Cole Harbour, NS and Melinda Nelson (Andrew) of Berry Mills, NB, like the son he never had Darryl Wach (Inge) of Lake Echo, NS, his grandchildren Jenavieve and Luke Coombs, and Caleb, Jaydon, Eli and Kendra Nelson, and honorary grandchildren Morgan and Haley Wach, his brothers Michael Power (Louise) and Nick Power (Sheelagh), his sister Rita Miller (David). Dexter was pre-deceased by his sister Patsy Rhyno (Doug). Dexter will be deeply missed by several family members including sisters/brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Dexter loved working from an early age and had several occupations including mining out West, nursing (LPN) and as a mechanic for many years at Canadian Tire and other locations. He was the owner and mechanic at Dexter’s Irving in Lake Echo for decades. Later in life, he went back to become a 2nd Class Power Engineer at the Dartmouth Sportsplex, he enjoyed working until just before his passing. We are grateful that Jamie Fleet contributed to him having a meaningful and rewarding end to his career. During his life, he enjoyed several sports including baseball, hockey, golf, and paddling. He was able to compete at Nationals and won medals in canoeing and kayaking. In 2020, a year after being diagnosed with colon cancer he won the senior men’s net championship at River Oaks golf course, where he was a member. Dexter attended Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church and we are grateful for Pastors Doug, Zac, and Frank, as well as the congregation’s prayers, love, and many visits. The family is grateful for the wonderful care over the years at DGH, QEII and the VON and palliative care teams (special thanks to nurse Théa Meeson). Thanks also to our family and friends who have gone above and beyond for us during this difficult time. We couldn’t have done this without your support. There will be a small memorial on Mar 18, 2023 at 2 pm in the chapel of Sweeny’s Funeral Home followed by a celebration at Jacob’s Loft (567 Main St., Yarmouth) from 3-5 pm. The celebration of life/funeral will be at Lake Echo Fellowship Baptist Church (17 Peter Ct., Mineville, NS) on Mar 25, 2023 at 2 pm. Please send memorial donations to Lake Echo Terry Fox Run (in memory of Dexter Power).
