Edmund "Coco" Barros Obituary

Edmund “Coco” Barros, 93, of Fairhaven passed away Sunday, March 12, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford after a period of declining health.  He was the loving husband of 70 years to Doris F. (St. Jean) DeBarros.

Born in Dartmouth, son of the late John and Mathilda (Ferreira) DeBarros, he grew up in New Bedford and settled in Fairhaven in 1981. Coco served in the Army during WWII and had been a commercial fisherman and lumper for several years.  He then went to work for the City of New Bedford DPW for 35 years until his retirement.  After retirement he ran E. Barros Boat Service, delivering ice and propane on the docks.  Coco was a mainstay at the docks and helped mark the board at the fish auction in the mornings.

He was a member of the Star in the East Masonic Lodge AF & AM in New Bedford, the Fairhaven Varsity Club, New Bedford YMCA, the Cuttyhunk Anglers Club and the DAV in New Bedford.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris;  his daughters and caregivers, Michelle DeBarros Almeida of New Bedford and Tammy Ann (DeBarros) Moutinho and her companion Joseph Viveiros of Fairhaven and son, Michael E. DeBarros and late wife Cheryl of Dartmouth;  four grandchildren, Nicole Marie Moutinho, Jacob Joseph DeBarros Viveiros, Jennifer Torres and Julie Meelia;  five great grandchildren, Luke, Olivia, Nicholas, Andrew and Ava;  a brother, Daniel “Jack” Barros and his wife Lisa of Greene, Iowa;  a nephew, John “Bunny” DeBarros of New Bedford;  and several other nieces and nephews.  Mr. Barros was the brother of the late John, Manuel and Edward DeBarros, Mae Borges and Beatrice Perry.

In accordance with his wishes he will be cremated and a service and celebration of his life will be held at 12pm Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the Seaman’s Bethel on Johnny Cake Hill in New Bedford.  Memorial donations may be made to the Bethel in Coco’s name.  Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.  For memorial register please visit, www.hathawayfunerals.com.
