STEWART, Donald Francis "Don"


At Picton Hospital Friday March 10, 2023, one month short of his 85th birthday. Don Stewart of Elizabeth Street and Ferguson Street, Picton. Predeceased by his wife, Bev (Mason), his parents, Gunner John Thomas Stewart and Annie Isabel (McIntosh), brother Sgt. J.T. (Jack) Stewart and wife Flo and Bev’s parents, Jesse Mason and Florence (Teddy) (Heffernan). Father of Scott (Karen Harman) of Lynden, ON. Much loved father of Shelley Gilbert (Todd) of Picton, ON. Sadly, missed Papa of Nathan & Sarah Stewart, Matt Gilbert (Tessa) & Rachel Davila (Adriel). Loving brother to retired WO Bernard (Butch) Stewart (Lorraine), MWO Wayne D. Stewart (the late Sheila & Joanne); retired Journeyman Electricians, Kevin Stewart (Mary), Brian F. Stewart (Elaine), Bruce Stewart (Sylvia Conrod); retired from BC Institute of Technology, Michael L. Stewart (Ted White) & Roy A. Stewart (Haruko Nagano); and his only sister, Air Canada retiree/world traveller Carmen Ann Bachynski (Victor). He will be remembered by his many nieces and nephews.


Don was born in Glace Bay, NS, leaving prior to completing High School. However, a few accomplishments include: a 1-year deployment on one of the first UN Peacekeeping missions in Egypt, long enough to win 2 Softball Championships; opening a Western Tire store; President, Kiwanis Club; election to the Picton PUC; Treasurer, VP and owner, with wife Bev, of Mason’s Department Stores Ltd. Don was a sought-after softball and hockey player in The County and while serving 9 years in the Canadian Army (RCHA & RCEME). He was a curler and golfer. In Picton, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge and The Royal Canadian Legion (50+ years).


Don rested at Rushnell Funeral Homes – Picton Chapel, 33 Main Street, (613-476-2450). A Celebration of Life remains to be scheduled.
