Carol G. Schermerhorn Smith Obituary

Carol (Pike) Schermerhorn Smith

Orrington

Carol Schermerhorn Smith, left for her eternal home on March 14, 2023. She was born in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., December 23, 1935 . She was named by her mother who told her she was her Christmas Carol. She grew up the only child of her Father’s second marriage. Carol was adored and raised to know God and his love. She was a quiet person who loved to laugh and loved people. Carol worked for many years at EMMC in registration and told us often how she loved that job and the people she met. She then worked at First MRI until she suffered a major stroke in 1999. Although she endured many devastating times, she did so with grace and love.

We can only imagine the joy as she is welcomed home by the Lord and by those she loves so much! Her first husband, the love of her life, Rev. Donald D. Schermerhorn, her parents, Lafayette and Ruth (Dunston) Pike, mother-in-law, Charlotte Schermerhorn, grandmother-in-law, May Sweet, brothers-in-law, Rev. Bernie Schermerhorn and Glenn Schermerhorn, two sons, Timothy Mark and David and son-in-law, David Getchell, along with many other family and friends. What a reunion it will be!

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Karen Schermerhorn and Cheryl Schermerhorn Dearing and her husband Jim, brother-in-law, Wayne D. Schermerhorn and his wife Rabbi Suzanne J. Schermerhorn; husband George “Butch” Smith, sister-in-law Faith Schermerhorn, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; many cherished nieces and nephews.

Although Carol’s memory was consumed by dementia, her recollection of the old hymns remained along with her love of Pine Grove Camp and her dear childhood friend, Lois Rupert.

We would like to thank all those who cared for Carol at the Maine Veteran’s Home, Bangor, her hospice nurse Melissa as well as Gary Smith and the staff at Brookings-Smith.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Friday, March 17, 2023 at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Rd., Orrington.

Interment will be at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, N.Y.
