Obituary

Ruth Louise Hertzman Robinson, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio January 18, 1928, the second child of Jack Hertzman and Lillian Shokler Hertzman. When she was three years old, the family moved to Miami Beach, Florida. Ruth often described her growing up years in a very positive way. She loved to sing. She loved to dance. She loved to paint and draw.

When she was 17 years old, her father died from a non-healing injury. Ruth and her family then moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio, where her mother got a job as a secretary at the Hebrew Union College, where Michael Robinson was attending school, and that is where they met. They subsequently married. They moved to Seattle WA., where her husband Michael, had his first appointment as a Rabbi. He was later offered a position in Pomona Calif. They had three children.

The family moved from Pomona, California to Croton on Hudson, New York where Michael became Rabbi of Temple Israel of Northern Westchester. Ruth joined the temple choir, and taught music in the religious school. As the rabbi’s wife, she hosted thousands of dinners at their home and coordinated hundreds of social gatherings year after year with grace and a welcoming smile. Ruth and her husband were very active in the community, championing many causes from civil rights, the anti-war movement and wage inequality.

They travelled extensively all over the world, but every year they took a vacation to a beach somewhere, because Ruth loved the ocean. Wherever they went Ruth carried a sketchbook. She was a talented artist. She loved to paint and draw. She painted landscapes, portraits, flowers, mountains, and houses.

In October 1981 her son Joel, at the age of 24, died tragically in a car accident. In the late 1980s, Ruth and Mike decided to move to California to be closer to family. Michael accepted a position at Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa CA. and they bought a home in Sebastopol. They quickly made many new friends and again became very active in the community and Temple. Ruth had a beautiful garden of flowers and vegetables, she painted prolifically, had many shows, and participated in Art Trails, she read tons of books, joined all kinds of groups, hosted many gatherings at their home.

In 2006 her husband passed away at home in Sebastopol California. Ruth continued to paint, to play tennis, to dance, and to sing. As her ability to manage a household diminished. She decided to move into “Friends House” a senior community in Santa Rosa. Unfortunately, this time was short-lived because of the many fires and evacuations, and Covid with its isolation.

She moved in with her daughter Jude and spent the last few years of her life in their home in the coastal woods of Inverness, CA. Here she was able to be at home surrounded and cared for by family and be a part of all the comings and goings of a household, with her grandchildren and even her great grandchildren, often at the table. She went to the beach, enjoyed the garden, played Scrabble, which she excelled at, did puzzles, watched westerns, listened to music, often breaking into song herself, and ate lots of chocolate!
