Mary Scott Barnes, 101, of Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach, after a long and fulfilling life, passed away March 13, 2023.

Mary was born in Waynesville, NC to Raymond and Elizabeth Scott but moved with her family to Norfolk at an early age.

She had many careers during her life, which included Cosmetology, Group Chief Operator for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company and as a social worker in Adoption, Teen Pregnancy and Elder Care. She was most proud, however, of her volunteer work. She was a Foster Mother to 42 children, worked with Meals on Wheels and volunteered over 4500 hours at Bayside Hospital.

Mary moved to Westminster Canterbury almost 25 years ago and was very active there teaching Tai Chi, serving on the Welcoming Committee and as floor representative. She was also involved in the establishment of the Meditation Garden.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years William E. Barnes. She is survived by a brother, Raymond Scott Jr. of Virginia Beach, a son, William Barnes Jr. of Elloree, S.C., a daughter, Patricia Sherrill of Portsmouth, two granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. A graveside funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Riverside Memorial Park, 1000 East Indian River Road, Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Westminster-Canterbury Meditation Garden, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
