Leila Stevenson Obituary

Leila Eleanor Stevenson age 92 years of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan died on Monday, March 13, 2023 at Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre with family at her side.

Leila was born in Shaunavon on March 8, 1931 to Charles and Clara Blinco. She lived on the farm Northwest of Shaunavon with three siblings. She attended Rock Creek School. Upon completing her education she went to work at the Ohio Café and also worked for Albert and Grace Stevenson. This is where she met the love of her life James (Jim) Stevenson. They were married October 25,1950 and were blessed with three children. They farmed and raised their family just four miles northwest of town. They loved to square and round dance which kept them busy during the fall and winter months. Leila was a great gardener and loved to be outdoors. As a farmer’s wife she was always doing something on the farm as well as working at the Robinsons Store for several years. When she lost James in 1991 she continued to farm with the help of grandsons. During the winter months she would crochet, quilt and play her music. Leila belonged to Centre Street United Church Choir and loved to sing. After the loss of their partners Mom and her sister Marge became very close. They would be together, shopping in Swift Current or a leisurely Sunday drive, probably ending up checking on their brother Floyd. Her family and seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren were very special to her. She always took an interest in what they were doing. Leila remained on the farm until 2020 when her health failed and moved to Shaunavon Long Term Care where she remained until her passing.

Leila was predeceased by her husband James in 1991, her son Eldon in 2007, son-in-law Les Illerbrun in 2004, her parents Charles Blinco in 1963 and Clara Blinco in 1998, brother Loyd in 1927, sister Isabell in 1927, brother Floyd in 2019, sister Loreta McCarty in 2019 and sister Marguery Carpenter in 2021.

She is survived by her son Eldon’s children, Jeff Stevenson (Stacy) and Carmen Hodgson both of Shaunavon; her daughter Charlene Illerbrun of Shaunavon and grandchildren Ryan Illerbrun (Cathie) of Shaunavon and Chris Illerbrun (Jessica) of Edmonton; her son Barry Stevenson (Bobbi) of Lloydminster, Alberta and grandchildren Erin Bandola (Dan) of Lloydminster, Alyson Jackson (Aaron) of Edmonton and Earl Stevenson of Lloydminster; fifteen great grandchildren, many Stevenson family members and several Stevenson brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held from Centre Street United Church in Shaunavon on Friday, March 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with United Church Minister Connie Sykes officiating. The eulogy will be presented by Erin Bandola and Earl Stevenson will provide special music. Pallbearers are Jeff Stevenson, Ryan Illerbrun, Chris Illerbrun, Carmen Hodgson, Erin Bandola and Alyson Jackson. Interment took place at Hillcrest Cemetery at Shaunavon.
