Paul James Sausville Obituary

Paul James Sausville 83, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023. He was born on November 12, 1939, to Charles and Dorothy Sausville.

A licensed professional engineer, Paul worked for NYS DEC for 36 years, retiring in 1989. Paul was widely acknowledged as the father of the NYS’s Petroleum and Chemical Bulk Storage Program. After retiring, Paul formed the consulting firm of Sausville and Schriber Engineers with his son-in-law, Steve.

Second only to his family, Paul’s passion was service to his community. He was a coach, treasurer, and board member of the Ballston Spa Junior Baseball League, where he played a critical role in the acquisition and development of Doubleday Fields, the current BSJBL ballfield complex. He was a long-time member of the Malta Sunrise Rotary Club and local Chamber of Commerce. He served as a member and Chairman of the Malta Town Planning Board from 1979-1989, was elected to the Town Board and served from 1990-2005, was Town Supervisor from 2006-2016 and was Chairman of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors for 2014. Paul and his wife Nancy especially enjoyed going door to door to meet and interact with the citizens of Malta, all of whom he considered his neighbors. Paul was instrumental in the planning and oversight of Malta during a pivotal time in Malta’s history, including the development of the Luther’s Forest Technology Park and the introduction of Global Foundries to Malta. Though deeply involved during this period of rapid development, Paul remained focused on maintaining Malta’s small town feel with a family oriented atmosphere.

Paul never stood still. He loved life and was constantly developing new interests and learning new skills. He ran Sausville’s Christmas Tree Farm for over 50 years, involving his children and grandchildren in the operation of the farm. Paul loved the holidays and seeing the joy on his customers’ faces as they carried on the age old tradition of cutting down their own Christmas tree. Paul also dabbled in blacksmithing, opening Saratoga Forge in 2012, and treated friends and family to his custom made creations. In 2016 Paul authored and published "A Beach Guide to Marie-Galante", a travel guide regarding a remote and idyllic Caribbean Island. Paul enjoyed going to craft fairs where he sold his hooks and the bird houses he made from dried gourds.

Paul’s greatest passion was his family and the love of his life, Nancy. Over their 65 years of marriage Paul and Nancy were inseparable and built a nourishing and loving home, raising their three children, Laura Schriber (Steve), Paul John (Donna) and Grace Frederick (Greg). Paul loved to watch his grandchildren grow and develop, and regaled in hearing of their latest adventures. Paul was happiest sitting on the porch of the cabin he and Nancy built on Schroon Lake (Camp Nancy), watching his grandchildren enjoy the lake and the camp. Paul lived a wonderful life and was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Paul is predeceased by his parents Charles and Dorothy, and his brothers Thomas and Charles. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his children, his grandchildren Katharine, Leah and Meghann Schriber; Corinne, Erin, Madilyn and Paul Jack Sausville; and Abigail and Jacqueline Frederick, a sister, Patricia Edmondson (Charles), and several nephews and nieces.

A private family service is planned, with a celebration of life to be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to the Malta Sunrise Rotary, or volunteering your time to a community organization.
