Obituary

Edythe Skipper Mitchell, 91, of Peachtree City, Georgia, passed away March 13, 2023. She was born on November 21, 1931, in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late professional golfer Thomas Skipper and Emily Skipper.

She graduated high school at 16 and followed her love of music, choosing Florida State University because of its excellent music program. There she met the love of her life, Leo Mitchell. She was a proud member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Her sorority house was right around the corner from the Lambda Chi Alpha house, Leo’s fraternity. Leo saw Edythe on Campus one day and asked a fraternity brother to introduce them, and they hit it off. They graduated from FSU and married on the same day, February 1st, 1953.

Following their honeymoon in Sarasota, Leo began a 17-year career with Phillip Petroleum. The young couple moved to Tampa where their 4 children were born: Kent 1955, Kathy 1957, Kirk 1959, and Kelley 1961. During Leo’s career, they were transferred to Atlanta, Miami, Hollywood, and Pembroke Pines, Fl. While in Miami, Edythe was the Director of the Music Department at the Church of Christ. She also taught 4th grade. After retiring from Phillips in 1970, Leo and Edythe opened their own real estate agency, Prestige Realty, in Hollywood, Fl. For 30 years they were partners in this real estate endeavor, and Edythe absolutely loved it. She enjoyed teaching, too, but as Edythe says, “You make more money in real estate.”

Leo and Edythe loved to take cruises in their later years, at times taking some of the family along with them. Edythe estimated that they had been on as many as 40 cruises, their favorite being to Bermuda. They often traveled to visit their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and to see her sister Kathy in Jacksonville, Fl.

After their second retirement, the Mitchells moved to Peachtree City in 2011 to be near some of their children and 8 grandchildren. Leo passed away in 2013, and the next day she moved in with her granddaughter, Kristen, and her husband Shaun, and their 4 sons. Edythe has 13 great-grandchildren living in Connecticut, Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Edythe wore a beautiful charm necklace with charms representing her 8 grandkids and great grandkids, not quite getting all 13 on there.

Edythe has always sung in church choirs wherever she lived, and until recently sung in the choir at the First Presbyterian Church. Living in Peachtree City gave her the freedom to get around as she pleased on her golf cart. She made almost daily trips to Fresh Market, and much too often brought donuts for Kristen’s boys. She spent the last 10 years with Kristen, Shaun, and the boys, enjoying watching them grow up into young men. In recent years she often talked about how much she missed Papi and how much he misses her. They have reunited once again, along with their son Kent, in the great beyond.

Edythe is preceded in death by her loving husband, Leo Mitchell, Jr.; and her son, Kent Mitchell. Edythe is survived by her children, Kirk (Kathy) Mitchell, Kathleen (Dr. Ned) McEwan, and Kelley Mitchell; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen (Fred) Womack; as well as extended family and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Peachtree City First Presbyterian Church, Peachtree City. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City.
