James Gordon McKenzie

<p>James Gordon McKenzie passed away peacefully in his home, with both sons at the bedside, on March 13, 2023, at the age of 79. He had tirelessly cared for his beloved wife Glenda Stone McKenzie during a lengthy illness until she died on November 26, 2022. Only after she passed did he begin to succumb to the metastatic, late-stage cancer he had been diagnosed with two years earlier. </p><p>Jim was preceded in death by his wife Glenda, by his parents Henry and Frances McKenzie, and by his brother Buddy McKenzie. He is survived by his sons, James Marshall (Kerri) McKenzie and Thomas Scott (Lara) McKenzie; five grandchildren Morgan, Colton, Parker, Holden, and Harper; and two dear sisters Marylu Gowen and Lynn Willis, and their families. </p><p>      Jim was born on July 31, 1943, and raised in Ashburn, Georgia. He was a standout athlete and a highly recruited quarterback. He graduated from Valdosta State University and worked as an accountant, eventually at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Health issues refocused his professional endeavors on what made him happy, and he began a career in the horse business. He worked at Tartan Stable in Ocala, Florida with the legendary thoroughbred racehorse Dr. Fager. He later managed the farm Forty Oaks in Ocala before relocating to Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1977 to launch his own operation, The Spring Place Farm. He bred and raised several stakes winning horses and established a national client base. In the mid-nineties, Jim changed careers and put his head for numbers to use as a real estate appraiser. </p><p> Jim was opinionated, strong willed, honest, and hard working. He was gregarious, interested in people, and lifelong learning. He was convinced that no man on the planet was untouchable because you could always offer to buy them a cup of coffee, tell them you want to pick their brain. </p><p> Nothing made him happier than the experiences of his family.
