Phillip Scott Jones Obituary

A Celebration of Life Service for Phillip Scott Jones, 52, of Jacksonville, will be at 2 pm on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Tredegar Chapel Congregational Holiness Church.  Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.  Casual, University of Alabama, or Oxford attire is encouraged.  Bishop Jason Beiler and Reverend Adam Morales will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 11 am until the service hour at the church.


Mr. Jones passed away March 11, 2023, at UAB Hospital.


Mr. Jones taught eighth-grade physical science and was a Greenpower USA coach at Oxford Middle School  He was a 1988 graduate of Hokes Bluff High School earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Jacksonville State University in 1992, then earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 2005.


Mr. Jones also earned a Minister’s license in 1989 and worked with his wife in youth ministries. He has served as a youth pastor, minister of music/worship leader and associate pastor as well as working at children’s and youth camps during the summers. He was also a sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.


He loved Jesus and he wanted to show that to young people.  If they learned science along the way then that was a bonus.


Mr. Jones began his teaching career in 1994 at Jacksonville Christian Academy then spent two years at Ohatchee High School before coming to Oxford Middle School in 2000.  He also taught robotics, beginner piano, music production, career prep and helped with the makerspace where students can create projects or crafts based on their own interest or what they are studying in class.


Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Odessa Jones and Ted and Rosa Williams; uncle, Perry Jones, aunts, Bonnie Huddleston and Mary Ann Ferguson; and nephews, Ethan and Giles Brown.


Survivors include his wife, Elaine Jones; his parents, M.C. and Sharron Jones; his brothers, John Allen Jones, Matthew Wayne Jones and Patrick Allen Jones; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, A.G. and Sandra Baggett; a sister-in-law, Marie Milner; a brother-in-law, Neil Baggett (Jim); a special brother-in-law, Shelton Brown (Samantha); niece and nephew, Rachel Blanchard (Daven) Daniel Milner, and Will Brown (Jessica); great babies, Cora, EmmaLee, Violet, Josiah, and Jethro; a special son, Chris Youngman (Joy) and their children, Oliver and  Elliott; a special school son, Trent Phillips; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.


Pallbearers will be Trent Phillips, Michael Smith, Shane Ferguson, Will Brown, John Williams, and Ike Stovall.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to fund the GreenpowerUSA Trailer at Oxford Middle School, 1750 US Highway 78, Oxford, AL 36203.
