Papillion, Nebraska Lawrence John Smith - Born in Omaha, Nebraska, June 23, 1939, passed away, Monday, June 12, 2017, at Creighton Medical Bergan Hospital of Omaha, battling an illness, at the age of 77. Lawrence is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie, (married March 14, 1970) of 47 years, son Jim (Lynda) Crouch, Chad Crouch, Jeff (Maria) Crouch, Mary Clark, Dawn (Scott) Brown. 16 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Predeceased in death by mother, Mary Catherine Smith-Magdziaz, father, George B Smith, brother James Smith, and son-in-law, Patrick Clark.Larry enlisted in the Army in 1963 and served in the armed services in the 7th Missile Battalion 2d Artillery AFO 301 and served in Korea. Lawrence spent most of his employment with Burlington Northern Railroad as a mechanist before retiring. Lawrence, grew up in the Florence area of North Omaha, Nebraska, after his mother's passing. He is a graduate of Tech High School. Among his many passions were fishing, camping, canoeing, baseball, football, hockey, and above all NASCAR. Larry spent a lot of his free time fixing cars with his Uncle George Schmidt. As a grandfather he also followed his grandkids' athletic careers in baseball, football, volleyball, softball, and fed his passion for cars helping grandson's mini-sprint car career.Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00pm till 6:00pm, followed with a Rosary service at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on, Friday, June 16th, 2017 at St. Phillip Neri, 8200 North 30th Street, Omaha, Nebraska at 10:00am.
